Spohn (16-5) got caught with some clean punches by DeAnda (18-6) early in the opening round of the light heavyweight bout. The sizable betting underdog had Spohn on the verge of a quick stoppage, but in the heat of the moment threw the series of illegal blows, causing referee John McCarthy to halt the action. After a break of several minutes, McCarthy deducted a point from DeAnda and the action resumed
