Brendan Loughnane came into 2021 PFL 1 with an extra chip on his shoulder. Loughnane (20-3) earned six points in his first PFL regular-season appearance, when he knocked out Sheymon Moraes in the first round, the only finish of the night. “Do you know how much of a weight is lifted off of my shoulders now to be the only finish of the night?” Loughnane asked MMA Junkie Radio. “It’s a massive lift off my shoulders. There’s a very, very high possibility now getting to the semis and the final, and that’s all that matters. That’s the goal.” It was his first fight in 16 months, but that wasn’t the only motivating factor for Loughnane

USA TODAY Sports/MMA Junkie rankings, April 27: Kamaru Usman, Rose Namajunas move up P4P lists

With the UFC, PFL and ONE Championship all in action this past week, there were moves to be made in the latest USA TODAY Sports/MMA Junkie rankings. In the UFC 261 main event, Kamaru Usman (19-1 MMA, 14-0 UFC) delivered a stunning knockout of Jorge Masvidal (35-15 MMA, 12-8 UFC) in the main event. With the win, Usman ran his UFC start to 14 straight wins and defended his welterweight title again. And with that win, he moved up our pound-for-pound list to the No. 2 spot. In addition, Rose Namajunas (10-4 MMA, 8-3 UFC) knocked out Zhang Weili (21-2 MMA, 5-1 UFC) to win the women’s strawweight title for a second time – and that warranted a move up the women’s pound-for-pound chart for her, as well.

PFL opened its 2021 season Friday with a main card filled with upsets. The three biggest favorites on the entire card – all with odds of 4-1 or higher – went down to unanimous decisions at Ocean Casino Resort in Atlantic City, N.J. In the main event, former UFC and WEC lightweight champion Anthony Pettis (24-11), who was -600 at BetMGM , was at times brutalized by underdog Clay Collard (19-8) before a third-round rally. But it wasn’t enough, and Collard picked up three points in the lightweight season standings against Pettis, who was one of the PFL’s most highly touted signings of the past year. A breakthrough boxer in 2020, Clay Collard carried his recent combat sports momentum into his MMA return Friday at 2021 PFL 1. Friday, Collard (19-8) upset former UFC lightweight champion Anthony Pettis (24-11) with a unanimous decision (29-27, 29-27, 29-28) victory. The judges’ scorecards came after Collard battered Pettis for the majority of three rounds.
