Timur Khizriev unhappy with 2024 PFL 3 win, thinks Ramadan affected his performance

CHICAGO – Timur Khizriev got the win and 3 points in the opening round of the 2024 PFL featherweight season, but he’s convinced there was room for much more. Friday, Khizriev (15-0) defeated veteran Brett Johns in a unanimous decison on the preliminary card of PFL 2024, Week 3 at Wintrust Arena. Although it was a clean victory, Khizriev doesn’t think he performed at his best against Johns (20-4), and he has an idea as to why that happened. “To be honest, I’m not fully happy with my performance,” Khizriev said in Russian through a translator in his post-fight interview. “Obviously, a win is a win, but I just feel like I wasn’t fully there

CHICAGO – It’s been a long time coming, but Don Madge finally got back in the cage Friday – and got a crucial result, too. Madge (11-4-1) submitted gunslinger Brennan Ward (17-8) just 62 seconds into a firefight to open the PFL’s 2024 welterweight season. The stoppage got Madge 6 points in the standings and a spot atop the leaderboard. Madge had been on the shelf for two years, ever since a loss to Raush Manfio to open the 2022 season.

Kai Kamaka III credits cousin Ray Cooper III for big-time PFL influence

CHICAGO – Kai Kamaka III got tossed into the deep end of the pool for his PFL debut Friday, but had a confidence boost thanks a family bond. Kamaka (13-5-1) outworked Bubba Jenkins (21-8) for a unanimous decision at the PFL’s third and final event of the first half of the 2024 regular season in Chicago. The win gave Kamaka 3 points in the featherweight standings . After the fight, Kamaka, a Bellator transfer from Hawaii who now has won four of his past five, said advice from his cousin, Ray Cooper III , helped ahead of his PFL debut. Cooper is a two-time $1 million PFL winner at welterweight. “I was kind of teary-eyed this morning,” Kamaka told MMA Junkie and other reporters after his win over Jenkins

PFL’s Gabriel Braga reflects on first win since father’s death: ‘In leaving us, he left me very ready’

CHICAGO – With a heavy heart, Gabriel Braga entered the cage for the first time since his father’s death. At 2024 PFL 3, Braga (13-1) began his featherweight season with a bout against Justin Gonzales. With one second left on the clock in Round 1, Braga prompted the referee to stop the fight after landing a series of hard punches that sent Gonzales (14-4) to the ground. Braga dropped to his knees in the center of the cage, letting the emotions of the entire moment take over as he lifted both hands toward the sky. “He left us, but in leaving us, he left me very ready,” Braga said about his father through an interpreter during a post-fight news conference. “Ready for these moments, ready to make him proud, and ready to conquer the world, so that’s what I’m here to do.” Braga’s father, Diego, was killed in January in Brazil.

CHICAGO – Adam Borics is happy with what he showed in his PFL debut, especially given the circumstances he had to deal with prior. The former Bellator title challenger debuted for the PFL this past Friday in the preliminary card of 2024 PFL 3 . Adam Borics (19-2) defeated veteran Enrique Barzola (20-8-2) by unanimous decision to score three points in the 2024 PFL featherweight season. Borics hadn’t fought since losing to Patricio Freire in 2022 in a Bellator title fight.

CHICAGO – Oddsmakers didn’t favor Shamil Musaev to get the job done against Logan Storley at 2024 PFL 3, but the Russian welterweight is likely to find himself as a favorite for the remainder of the season. In a matchup between PFL debuting fighters, Musaev (17-0-1 MMA, 1-0 PFL) became the first to stop former interm Bellator champ Storley (15-3 MMA, 0-1 PFL) by landing heavy punches. Musaev had Storley in danger late in the first round, and continued his momentum to get the finish just 27 seconds into Round 2. “Some people had me as the underdog. I don’t know, maybe they didn’t do enough research,” Musaev told reporters during a post-fight news conference. Musaev kept his unbeaten record intact and claimed five points, good enough for the current No. 3 spot in the welterweight regular season standings behind six-point earners Don Madge and Murad Ramazanov.

Pedro Carvalho is far from happy with how his PFL debut went. The Bellator veteran lost by first-round TKO to Brendan Loughnane in the co-main event of Friday’s 2024 PFL 3 event. Carvalho (13-9) was hurt early by Loughnane (28-5), but was fighting back. In the final sequence, Loughnane connected with a shot on a downed Carvalho, and referee Kevin MacDonald waved off the fight as Carvalho was looking for a takedown.
