LAS VEGAS – Tim Kennedy not only was willing to grapple with Roger Gracie, he took the jiu-jitsu ace to the ground. Although Kennedy struggled to find the 6-foot-4 Gracie’s chin, he controlled the fight to shut out the Brazilian on two of three judges’ scorecards. The middleweight bout of Strikeforce vets was part of the main card of today’s UFC 162 event at MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas. It aired on pay-per-view following prelims on FX and Facebook. Things looked good for Gracie early in the first round when he took Kennedy down and transitioned to back mount. For a few tense moments, Kennedy suffered through a body triangle and fought off choke attempts. But he eventually escaped to his feet, where he snuck strikes in close. In the second frame, Kennedy turned the tables on Gracie and took the fight to the mat, where he landed several punches that shifted the fight’s momentum.

On Saturday at UFC 162, Tim Kennedy makes his UFC debut after 12 years as a professional MMA fighter, including three in the now-defunct Strikeforce organization, where he once vied for the promotion’s middleweight belt. It’s long overdue, and yet Kennedy looks at the booking as bittersweet. And no, it’s got nothing to do with his fight purse . Although he’s fighting Brazilian jiu-jitsu ace Roger Gracie (6-1 MMA, 0-0 UFC) on the pay-per-view card’s swing bout, the always-outspoken Kennedy (15-4 MMA, 0-0 UFC) said he’d much rather be paired against a UFC veteran. Fighting in Strikeforce, he constantly was being compared to the middleweights in the industry-leader and asked about whether he measured up to the UFC roster. Report: Joseph Benavidez vs. Jussier Formiga targeted for UFC on FOX Sports 1 3

A flyweight matchup between perennial contender Joseph Benavidez (18-3 MMA, 5-1 UFC) and Brazilian submission ace Jussier Formiga (15-2 MMA, 1-1 UFC) is reportedly the first bout set for September’s UFC on FOX Sports 1 3 event. The booking of top-10 contestants was today reported by Brazilian outlet Globo.com , though UFC officials have yet to make an announcement. UFC on FOX Sports 1 3 takes place Sept. 4 in Brazil. UFC officials have yet to announce a venue for the card, but Globo.com reports that Belo Horizonte, which hosted UFC 147, and Porto Alegre are currently the leading candidates to serve as host city.

Brazilian jiu-jitsu ace Robert Drysdale (6-0 MMA, 0-0 UFC) has signed with the UFC and will meet fellow light heavyweight Ednaldo Oliveira (13-1-1 MMA, 0-1 UFC) at UFC 163. UFC officials confirmed the fight by retweeting an initial report from the Las Vegas Review-Journal . UFC 163 takes place Aug. 3 at HSBC Arena in Rio de Janeiro.
