Chael Sonnen surprised many by submitting Mauricio “Shogun” Rua at UFC Fight Night 26 on Saturday night in Boston. Hardly anyone, however, could be counted as startled that he immediately took aim at Wanderlei Silva , calling out the former Pride FC champion following his victory. “Wanderlei Silva, six feet tall and 205 pounds, boy, until I met you, I didn’t know they could stack crap that high,” he declared. “Wanderlei Silva, three months, you and the bad guy.” The funny thing is, now that Sonnen has defeated Shogun, proving that he is still a fighter to be contended with at the top of either the 205-pound or 185-pound division, everyone wants to fight him.

SEATTLE – There were differing viewpoints on the merit of UFC on FOX 8's co-main event, though among those within the promotion, the most forceful opinion came afterward from UFC President Dana White. Following the FOX-televised fight, which took place Saturday night at Seattle's KeyArena, White specifically took aim Jake Ellenberger 's (29-7 MMA, 8-3 UFC) performance at the post-event press conference. But Rory MacDonald (15-1 MMA, 6-1 UFC) didn't escape notice, either. "When you get these fights where guys talk s--t, those fights always suck," White said of the bout. "I think that for Ellenberger to go out and say [MacDonald] doesn't deserve to be in the top-10 and then not go out and try to prove that he doesn't belong in the top-10...Ellenberger literally did nothing

Referee Herb Dean will control the cage when Anderson Silva and Chris Weidman square off for Silva’s UFC middleweight championship. Nevada State Athletic Commission officials on Friday assigned Dean as the referee for the bout. They also named Adalaide Byrd, Marcos Rosales and Patricia Morse Jarman as the fight’s judges. Silva and Weidman headline UFC 162 , which takes place on July 6 at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas. UFC president Dana White recently took aim at referee Steve Mazzagatti , heavily criticizing the official’s actions in the World Series of Fighting 3 main event between Jon Fitch and Josh Burkman.
Anthony Pettis ’ hopes of fighting any time in August were dashed on Wednesday when UFC doctors said that he needs at least six weeks to recover from a recent tear to his meniscus. MMAWeekly.com sources confirmed the news first reported by ESPN’s Brett Okamoto, who received confirmation from UFC president Dana White . The good news is that it appears Pettis will avoid surgery. The injury occurred while he was training with Phil Davis during a promotional trip in Rio de Janeiro, where Pettis was supposed to challenge featherweight champion Jose Aldo on Aug. 3 at UFC 163. After dropping out of the Aldo fight, Pettis took aim at lightweight champion Benson Henderson at UFC 164, which happens to be slated for Aug. 28 in Pettis’ hometown of Milwaukee. The problem with that is UFC officials have already announced Henderson would defend his belt against TJ Grant at UFC 164.
