PFL announces 2025 heavyweight and light heavyweight tournament participants

The fighters competing on this year’s PFL heavyweight and light heavyweight tournaments are set. PFL announced on Wednesday the eight fighters that will be competing in each respective weight class, along with alternate names for the 205-pound division. At heavyweight, most notably former interim Bellator champion Valentin Moldavsky and recent signee in UFC veteran Alexander Romanov will be participating. And at light heavyweight, former Bellator champion and UFC veteran Phil Davis will be competing alongside former PFL champions Rob Wilkinson and Antonio Carlos Jr.

Alexandr Romanov says he needs several more fights before he can ask for UFC title shot

SALT LAKE CITY – Alexander Romanov is thinking about a future title shot, but he’s going about it in a rational and realistic manner. The unbeaten Romanov has 15 of his 16 wins by stoppage and is off to a perfect 5-0 start in the UFC against increasingly tough competition, including back-to-back finishes of Jared Vanderaa and Chase Sherman. Saturday at UFC 278, Romanov (16-0 MMA, 5-0 UFC) takes on Marcin Tybura (22-7 MMA, 9-6 UFC) at heavyweight to close out the preliminary card at Vivint Arena in Salt Lake City. It’s the kind of fight that can propel him into the upper echelon of the division. “This is a very big opportunity to show I can fight in the top 10,” Romanov said at Wednesday’s UFC 278 media day. “I have respect for him because he’s a very tough fighter.

Roque Martinez vs. Alexander Romanov booked as late addition to UFC on ESPN+ 35

A heavyweight matchup is a late addition to the UFC on ESPN+ 35 lineup. Former RIZIN fighter Roque Martinez has signed with the UFC and will take on Romania’s Alexander Romanov at the UFC Apex in Las Vegas on Saturday. A person with knowledge of the situation recently confirmed the booking to MMA Junkie but asked to remain anonymous as the promotion has yet to make an official announcement

Gym: Alexander Romanov was removed from UFC 251 due to positive COVID-19 tests

Alexander Romanov won’t be fighting at UFC 251 and according to his gym, that’s due to positive COVID-19 tests. In an Instagram post Thursday, his home gym, Lion Comrat, revealed that Romanov (11-0 MMA, 0-0 UFC) and his coaches had tested positive for COVID-19 on July 1. The post also said a second test had come back negative. However, the wording makes it unclear whether the negative test was an antibody test or a second swab test. Romanov was removed from his UFC 251 fight against Marcin Tybura late this past week and was replaced by Maxim Grishin

UFC announces full ‘Fight Island’ lineup, includes 47 bouts in 15 days

UFC president Dana White today announced the complete lineup for the four cards that will take place next month in Yas Island, Abu Dhabi. The unique setup has been necessitated by the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, which has made it difficult to get international fighters into the U.S.
