Among the notable changes, women’s lightweight standout Kayla Harrison (3-0), a two-time Olympic gold medalist in judo, now headlines the season opener against Svetlana Khautova (2-0). In addition, Chris Curtis (20-5) now takes on Andre Fialho (10-1) on that event’s preliminary card.

PFL announces main cards for first three events of Season 2

The PFL takes an early summer residency in Long Island for the first three events of its second season. The promotion on Thursday announced main cards for PFL 1, PFL 2 and PFL 3, which respectively take place May 9, May 23 and June 6 at Nassau Veterans Memorial Coliseum in Uniondale, N.Y. The fight cards alternate between ESPN+ and ESPN2. PFL 1’s prelims stream before heading over to ESPN2, and PFL 2 and PFL 3 kick off on ESPN2 before main card action on ESPN+.

PFL continues to build toward the promotion’s second season, and company executives today announced 29 names that will feature in the 2019 schedule. “We are proud that PFL is the organization fighters want to be part of, as these guys have the talent and star-power to have chosen any MMA organization,” PFL President Ray Sefo stated. “PFL has only 68 slots this year for fighters, and the harsh reality is it is highly competitive to get into this league. Fighters from around the world want to control their own destiny, and after seeing six of their peers last year cash $1 million checks and win championship belts, they have come hungry to compete. “Storylines are forming, rivalries are brewing, training is starting … and we’re not done yet. We will continue with Round 3 of ‘The Selection’ as we finalize the PFL 2019 roster.” At featherweight, PFL newcomers Alex Gilpin (12-1) and Luis Rafael Laurentino (33-1) join returning athletes Alexandre Almeida (20-9), Alexandre Bezerra (22-6) and Andre Harrison (20-1).

But just when it looked like Nicholson was about to walk right over Copeland, with Copeland starting to bleed from a big cut above his right eye, Nicholson walked right into a massive overhand right hand from Copeland and was out in an instant.

On Friday, the inaugural season of the Professional Fighters League sees an historic moment with the start of its playoffs. The PFL debuted earlier this year with a regular season that had fighters competing twice – and earning points to try to qualify for the postseason. Fighters in each of six weight classes then could make their way into eight-man fields, and the winner of each division will get $1 million guaranteed. At PFL 8, the opening round of the playoffs gets underway in the featherweight and heavyweight divisions. After the first four fights in each class, the winners then will have to fight a second time in the semifinals to make it to the finals, which will take place on New Year’s Eve in New York City.

PFL 7 results: Doc stoppage puts Smealinho Rama in playoffs with win over Jamie Abdallah

After 10 minutes of a bloody slugfest between Smealinho Rama and Jamie Abdallah , their fight essentially was moot – or so we thought for about a minute. Then the controversy started. Both Rama and Abdallah needed a finish in the first or second round in order to make the light heavyweight playoffs. A finish in the third round for either of them wouldn’t be enough. But after the second round, a cageside doctor shut the fight down after checking the damage to Abdallah’s (7-4) face and left orbital. That gave Rama (11-4) the win by TKO – at the 5:00 mark of the second round, which put him into the playoffs.

LFA 46 took place Friday on a military base, and the AXS TV-televised promotion brought some weirdness and drama. Joint Base Langley-Eustis in Newport News, Va., hosted the card, and the servicemen and servicewomen in attendance certainly got a show. As reported late Friday night, a fight between Mumia Abu Dey Ali (3-1) and Mitch Aguiar (1-1) ended in 31 seconds with an absolutely stupid knockout sequence.
