In case you didn’t notice, last weekend was a rare slow one in the mixed martial arts world. No UFC events, no Bellator, not much of anything worldwide on a major level. That, in turn, means there are few changes to this week’s USA TODAY Sports/MMA Junkie MMA rankings. There is, in fact, just one move of note: Alexis Dufresne has been removed from the women’s featherweights due to inactivity, as she has not fought in two years

Unique submissions highlighted 2017, but which was most impressive?

Although submissions happened at a slightly lessened rate statistically at the top of the sport, there were plenty of awesome finishes in 2017 that stemmed from memorable bits of grappling. There were a number of first to take place in the UFC specifically over the past 12 months, and some marquee bouts ended in submissions, as well. With 2017 about to come to a close, everyone is debating which finish most deserves “Submission of the Year” honors.

The headlining title fight is set, but Friday’s Bellator 189 card has lost a fight. Women’s featherweight champion Julia Budd (10-2 MMA, 4-0 BMMA) and challenger Arlene Blencowe (10-6 MMA, 3-2 BMMA) both successfully made weight for the main event. Budd weighed 143.9 pounds, and Blencowe was 144.6. Although the headliners were on the mark, a preliminary-card bout between Alexis Dufresne (6-3 MMA, 1-1 BMMA) and Amber Leibrock (2-1 MMA, 0-0 BMMA) was scrapped.

Longtime UFC fighter Sam Sicilia now has a date and an opponent for his Bellator debut. Sicilia (15-8 MMA, 0-0 BMMA) will take on former bantamweight champion Marcos Galvao (18-8-1 MMA, 8-5 BMMA) in a featherweight bout at Bellator 189 in December. A Bellator official told MMAjunkie of the booking today

Bellator 181 sees Brittney Elkin step in to face Amanda Bell, Katy Collins vs. Bruna Vargas added

Featherweight prospect Brittney Elkin is set to make her Bellator debut on Friday night at “Bellator 181: Campos vs. Girtz 3” in Thackerville, Okla. Elkin (3-3 MMA, 0-0 BMMA) steps in on short notice to face Amanda Bell (4-4 MMA, 0-0 BMMA) in a rematch from April 2014. Bell’s original opponent for Friday’s card, Alexis Dufresne , withdrew from the event due to undisclosed reasons, leaving an opportunity for Elkin to sign on for her most high-profile fight to date. Also confirmed for the Bellator 181 preliminary card is a flyweight matchup between proven finisher Katy Collins (6-2 MMA, 1-1 BMMA) and highly-touted Brazilian Bruna Vargas (2-1 MMA, 0-1 BMMA), who seeks redemption after dropping her Bellator debut this past year. Bellator 174 resulted in the addition of a new champion and the loss of a pioneer of women’s MMA. Julia Budd dominated Marloes Coenen for three rounds before finally finishing her in the fourth and winning the inaugural Bellator women’s featherweight title by TKO. “It’s been a long road,” Budd said. “I don’t think anyone thought it would get to this.” Coenen (23-8, 2-2 BMMA), the former Strikeforce women’s bantamweight champion, announced her retirement in her post-fight interview after nearly 17 years as a professional mixed martial artist. Budd (10-2, 4-0 BMMA) opened the first round with a nice takedown, but it was Coenen who looked more comfortable on the ground.
