UFC 183 medical suspensions: Five get half-year terms, Tyron Woodley needs clearance

Tyron Woodley and Kelvin Gastelum UFC 183 headlining middleweights Nick Diaz and Anderson Silva made it out of their fight with the worst injuries being some cuts on the face of Diaz. Both men received small medical suspensions as a result of their fight. The Nevada State Athletic Commission, which regulated the event, today released the official medical suspensions arising from Saturday’s event, which took place at The MGM Grand Garden Arena and aired live on pay-per-view, FOX Sports 1 and UFC Fight Pass.

Thales Leites UFC 183 concluded a four-event month for the organization, and a winning performance from an all-time great in Anderson Silva (34-6 MMA, 17-2 UFC) capped off the run. “The Spider” returned to the octagon after a 13-month layoff and outpointed Nick Diaz (26-10 MMA, 7-7 UFC) over five rounds at Las Vegas’ MGM Grand Garden Arena for his 17th UFC victory, the most of any fighter at 185 pounds or heavier. Silva’s successful effort further entrenched him in the UFC record books, but he wasn’t the only one to deliver a victory of note. Thiago “Marreta” Santos LAS VEGAS – UFC 183 kicked off with a bout between Andy Enz and Thiago “Marreta” Santos that didn’t make it out of the first round as Santos blitzed Enz with a flurry of strikes. The middleweight bout opened up the preliminary card of today’s UFC 183 event at MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas. It streamed on UFC Fight Pass ahead of additional prelims on FOX Sports 1 and a main card on pay-per-view. Santos was throwing leg kicks early while Enz tried to stay on the outside and used his longer limbs to keep his foe at bay. While Santos was loading up on his punches, it was Enz who landed the first hard punch. However, Santos flipped things moments later

SAN ANTONIO – Marcelo Guimaraes earned the win over Andy Enz , though the judges nearly took away a rightful victory. Although a close bout, Guimaraes (9-1-1 MMA, 2-1 UFC) clearly deserved the victory, but he settled for a split decision over Andy Enz (7-2 MMA, 0-2 UFC). The middleweight bout was part of the preliminary card of today’s UFC Fight Night 44 event at AT&T Center in San Antonio.

UFC middleweight Andy Enz reached a crossroads early in his MMA career when the intensity of his training intersected with the desire to be a normal 18-year-old – and also to be an exceptional one. Enz was about to be called up to the Marines when he heard of auditions for “The Ultimate Fighter 17.” He figured it might be his last shot at being successful in MMA. So instead of enlisting, he made the trip to Las Vegas. Although Enz had the unfortunate luck of meeting eventual finalist Uriah Hall in the elimination round, he still won a UFC contract. But another reckoning was in store when the hard-slugging Clint Hester outpointed him at this past February’s UFC 169.

Myles Jury out, Trevino meets Trujillo, Johnny Case meets Joe Ellenberger at UFC Fight Night 44

The UFC’s debut in San Antonio later this month has seen a pair of changes. Myles Jury (14-0 MMA, 5-0 UFC) is out of his lightweight fight against Abel Trujillo (12-5 MMA, 3-1 UFC), and Frank Trevino (12-0 MMA, 1-0 UFC) will move up the card to take Jury’s place. FOX Sports first reported the change. That change left Joe Ellenberger (14-1 MMA, 0-0 UFC), Trevino’s original opponent, without a foe. But UFC newcomer Johnny Case (13-4 MMA, 0-0 UFC) said on Twitter that he has signed with the promotion and will be taking on Ellenberger on the card. UFC Fight Night 44 takes place June 28 at AT&T Center in San Antonio.
