Chris Weidman Coach Believes Anderson Silva is Going to Have a “Bad Night” in Rematch

UFC middleweight champion Chris Weidman ended Anderson Silva’s seven-year reign atop the middleweight division at UFC 162 on July 6 by knockout. The two are set to rematch on Dec. 28 at UFC 168, and Weidman’s coach, Ray Longo, thinks it’s going to be another bad night for Silva. “This guy had a highlight reel that would scare the crap out of anybody. Now, knowing that he can knock this guy out – you’ve seen it in boxing a hundred times, guys don’t come back from that type of knockout. On top of that, the guy is 40 or 39 or whatever he is. I don’t see it,” Longo told MMAWeekly.com content partner Shameless Radio about the rematch. Chris Weidman’s Knockout of Anderson Silva Wasn’t an Upset to Coach Ray Longo

It’s been well documented that many professional fighters were picking Chris Weidman to upset Anderson Silva at UFC 162 on July 6. When Weidman did just that, it sent shockwaves throughout the mixed martial arts industry, but not all were that stunned with the outcome. Weidman’s coach, Ray Longo, didn’t see Weidman’s knockout of Silva as an upset at all. “With Weidman, anybody that’s been in the gym with him, or who has sparred with him or rolled with him, I don’t think one guy thought that was an upset,” Longo told MMAWeekly.com content partner Shameless Radio . “This kid is for real. I think that’s why the pros were picking him. I think that grapevine was all over the place. The pros have a nice grapevine. I think GSP trained with him a little bit. He was at least in the room with him. Once one guy says one thing, it’s that whole telephone line; it starts going down the line. Anybody that’s trained or been in the room with him, this kid is a beast,” added Longo. Weidman’s confidence leading up to the fight was that of a veteran and less like a fighter with nine professional fights taking on the greatest fighter in mixed martial arts history. “Weidman was a four-time All-American. I think he went out for the Olympics. You don’t get to that level without being mentally strong,” Longo pointed out. Experience wasn’t the only thing Weidman had to overcome to defeat Silva. Weidman had been out of action for a year prior to the Silva fight. He underwent shoulder surgery and lost his home in Hurricane Sandy and was in financial ruin. Ref Herb Dean was unsure if Anderson Silva was faking or unconscious at UFC 162

Veteran referee Herb Dean had refereed four Anderson Silva fights prior to UFC 162 and seen others cageside. So when Silva began to clown Chris Weidman in the main event of this past Saturday’s pay-per-view, he did little else but pay close attention. Dean couldn’t hear what, if anything, “The Spider” was saying when he gesticulated at Weidman in the middle of exchanges. “I didn’t have any problem with it,” Dean told MMAjunkie.com Radio (www.mmajunkie.com/radio). “If that’s what he wanted to do. Everybody is in there for their own reasons, and he’s in there to do something great, and he challenges himself to be able to do his antics while he’s right there in the danger zone, and he was doing his thing.” Unfortunately for Silva, that led to a different result than any of the other times he stepped into the octagon and toyed with his opponents. For the first time in his octagon career, his antics caught up to him when Weidman landed a left hook that sent him crashing to the mat.

With superfights now scrapped, UFC boss insists Weidman vs. Silva II up next

LAS VEGAS – Chris Weidman (10-0 MMA, 6-0 UFC) promised to ruin the UFC’s plans for an interdivisional superfight, and he made good on his end of the bargain by downing MMA legend Anderson Silva (33-5 MMA, 16-1 UFC). And while “The Spider” doesn’t seem interested in a rematch right now, UFC President Dana White believes Weidman and Silva will meet again in their next appearance. “Anderson Silva needs to go home, hang out with his family, take a week or two to shake this thing off,” White told a small group of reporters following Saturday’s post-UFC 162 press conference. “There are times when guys will win a fight, and they don’t want to talk for three weeks. It’s really part of the process, it really is, and especially a big night like tonight. And when you lose the way that he lost, there’s a process for this.” Weidman and Silva headlined Saturday’s UFC 162 event at Las Vegas’ MGM Grand Garden Arena. The undefeated Weidman was supremely confident throughout the buildup to the fight, and he shocked the world with a crushing second-round knockout of the former champ, whose showboating antics did little to get inside his opponent’s head.
