Sonnen’s flare for phonetics, however, landed him in hot water following a recent appearance on Fox Sports Live. He was there to discuss Jon Jones ’ upcoming title defense against Alexander Gustafsson, and served on a panel discussing the hot topics of the day. Cerrone, who has become a fan-friendly scraper of epic proportions during his tenure in the UFC was making his tenth appearance in the Octagon and was looking to add some career momentum after his recent win over K.J. Noons at UFC 160. Dos Anjos was riding a UFC career best four-fight winning streak, and certainly wasn’t interested in seeing “The Cowboy” render all of his previous victories moot

UFC president Dana White was a guest on Wednesday night’s edition of Fox Sports Live, where he unveiled news of Lyoto Machida’s drop to middleweight and received another plea from Chael Sonnen for a fight with Wanderlei Silva . White also, however, defended his friend, Alex Rodriguez. A-Rod is a Major League Baseball player for the New York Yankees, but is currently garnering attention for his alleged role in the Biogenesis performance enhancing drug scandal and subsequent 211-game suspension. After blasting Sports Illustrated on ESPN2, UFC President Dana White today made an appearance on “SI Now,” where he angrily denounced the storied news outlet’s coverage of UFC 162. “I honestly thought you guys were calling to apologize because you were embarrassed at how ridiculous your show was,” White told SI Now’s Maggie Gray, who this past week moderated a panel of writers who discussed the possibility of fight-fixing at the July 6 pay-per-view event. “Now as I sit here and talk to you, you’re even more ridiculous, and I’ll bet you this whole interview doesn’t see the light of day. If your producer’s smart, he’ll take this tape out and throw it right in the garbage so the world can’t hear what I’m saying to you right now.” SI, of course, did release the interview as part of the show, which covers a variety of current topics in the sports world. On Wednesday, an SI PR rep declined to comment when contacted by MMAjunkie.com (www.mmajunkie.com) on White’s interview with ESPN2′s “Highly Questionable,” where he interrupted an interview to blast the SI panel . Gray defended the segment by saying the topic of fight-fixing had also been broached by reporters covering the event.

A welterweight contest between two fighters looking for their first UFC win is the latest addition to September’s UFC on FOX Sports 1 3 event, as Sean Spencer (9-2 MMA, 0-1 UFC) meets Yuri Villefort (6-2 MMA, 0-1 UFC). UFC officials today announced the new matchup. Featuring a light heavyweight headliner between Ryan Bader and Glover Teixeira , UFC on FOX Sports 1 3 takes place Sept. 4 and will serve as the lead-in to the new season of “The Ultimate Fighter.” The event will be the promotion’s return to Belo Horizonte, Brazil, after first visiting for UFC 147, which also took place at Estadio Jornalista Felipe Drumond one year ago. The evening’s main card airs on FOX Sports 1 following prelims on Facebook. The positioning of the Spencer vs. Villefort was not revealed but would seem a likely candidate for the preliminary bouts. LAS VEGAS – Chris Weidman (10-0 MMA, 6-0 UFC) promised to ruin the UFC’s plans for an interdivisional superfight, and he made good on his end of the bargain by downing MMA legend Anderson Silva (33-5 MMA, 16-1 UFC). And while “The Spider” doesn’t seem interested in a rematch right now, UFC President Dana White believes Weidman and Silva will meet again in their next appearance. “Anderson Silva needs to go home, hang out with his family, take a week or two to shake this thing off,” White told a small group of reporters following Saturday’s post-UFC 162 press conference. “There are times when guys will win a fight, and they don’t want to talk for three weeks. It’s really part of the process, it really is, and especially a big night like tonight. And when you lose the way that he lost, there’s a process for this.” Weidman and Silva headlined Saturday’s UFC 162 event at Las Vegas’ MGM Grand Garden Arena. The undefeated Weidman was supremely confident throughout the buildup to the fight, and he shocked the world with a crushing second-round knockout of the former champ, whose showboating antics did little to get inside his opponent’s head.
