Demetrious Johnson on His UFC on Fox 8 Performance and Superfight Prospects (Video)

Demetrious Johnson continued to put his stamp on the UFC flyweight division with a dominant victory over John Moraga at UFC on Fox 8 on Saturday night in Seattle. Johnson controlled the fight, nearly from bell to bell, save for a couple explosions from Moraga, and finished with an armbar late in the fifth and final round. It was only Johnson’s second title defense, but talk already has shifted to whether or not he should step outside his division and take on a superfight, which seems to be all the rage lately. Johnson, and company president Dana White, certainly had a lot to say about Johnson’s performance on Saturday night and the prospects of fighting up against bantamweight champions following his victory on Saturday night.

UFC on FOX 8 bonuses: Johnson, Guillard, Herman, Smith earn $50,000

SEATTLE – Demetrious Johnson , Melvin Guillard , Ed Herman and Trevor Smith each earned $50,000 bonuses for their performances at Saturday’s UFC on FOX 8 event. Johnson won “Submission of the Night,” Guillard earned the “Knockout of the Night” and Herman and Smith picked up “Fight of the Night” honors. UFC officials announced the winners at the night’s post-event news conference, which MMAjunkie.com (www.mmajunkie.com) attended. UFC on FOX 8 took place at KeyArena in Seattle. The main card aired on FOX following prelims on FX and Facebook. Johnson (18-2-1 MMA, 6-1-1 UFC) dominated John Moraga (12-2 MMA, 2-1 UFC) with 11 takedowns into the fifth round, but the flyweight champion continued to go after submissions. Deep in the fifth, Johnson went after an armbar and got it, forcing Moraga to tap with just 1:17 left in the fight for the latest submission in UFC history. Guillard (31-12-2 MMA, 12-8 UFC) needed to rebound in a big way after back-to-back losses and four setbacks in his past five fights.

The bout headlined Saturday’s UFC on FOX 8 event at Seattle’s KeyArena. It aired on FOX following prelims on FX and Facebook. Moraga (12-2 MMA, 2-1 UFC), who went from a pair of low-profile wins on untelevised UFC preliminary cards to a network-televised main event, was simply outmatched once Johnson (18-2-1 MMA, 6-1-1 UFC) closed the distance. Both fighters come from wrestling backgrounds, but “Mighty Mouse” continually put Moraga on his back and clearly won rounds before securing a final-round armbar to halt the bout

UFC newcomer Jessica Andrade ‘s bright smile hides a fierce martial arts competitor. The only grin bigger than hers during an open workout in support of UFC on FOX 8 belonged to her opponent, recent bantamweight title challenger Liz Carmouche . But Andrade’s nickname is also “Bate Estaca,” which in Portuguese means “Pile Driver.” It’s an illegal move in MMA, and one that immediately prompts howls for point deductions. Andrade, a blue belt in jiu-jitsu who lives in the city of Niteroi in the state of Rio de Janeiro, earned it during a grappling competition in which she faced a larger opponent. During their match, she was caught in an armbar, and in a panic, picked up the opponent and slammed her on her head. She doesn’t believe in cheating, of course, but she’s kept the name throughout her 11-fight career because it just might serve a purpose in the UFC. “I think it’s a cool nickname if it puts fear in the hearts of my opponents,” Andrade told MMAjunkie.com (www.mmajunkie.com). WINNIPEG – A bantamweight curtain-jerker between Yves Jabouin and Dustin Pague offered another case study in the relative values of position, strikes and submission attempts – at least through the eyes of three judges. Despite Pague constantly threatening submissions and securing several dominant positions, the French-Canadian Jabouin took the fight on two of three judges’ scorecards for a split-decision win. The bantamweight bout opened today’s UFC 161 event at MTS Centre in Winnipeg. It streamed on Facebook ahead of additional prelims on FX and a pay-per-view main card. But instead, the two tumbled to the mat early and spent the better part of the fight in a heated grappling match. Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira avoids injury in UFC on FUEL TV 10 loss

FORTALEZA, BRAZIL – Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira was a no-show at Saturday’s UFC on FUEL TV 10 post-fight press conference, but the veteran heavyweight avoided any serious injuries. Nogueira (34-8-1 MMA, 5-4 UFC), who suffered a loss to Fabricio Werdum (17-5-1 MMA, 5-2 UFC) in the event’s FUEL TV-televised headliner, submitted to a second-round armbar as he was trapped in an awkward position in the clash of Brazilian grappling standouts. Nogueira was coming off a win over Dave Herman , but a bout prior, Frank Mir snapped his arm with a kimura. It was an ugly scene that was difficult for “Minotauro’s” fans to watch. This time around, though, the former champ avoided any serious injuries. “Our champion @Minotauromma already did an X-ray, and thank God, did not fracture (his arm) and is already out of the hospital,” his coach, Luiz Dorea, tweeted in Portuguese earlier this morning. Potential shoulder and arm injuries were both ruled out. The Brazilian heavyweights, who also recently served as head coaches on “The Ultimate Fighter: Brazil 2,” met in the FUEL TV-televised headliner of Saturday’s UFC on FUEL TV 10 event at Paulo Sarasate Arena in Fortaleza, Ceara, Brazil. Werdum (17-5-1 MMA, 5-2 UFC) largely controlled the action and overcame some first-round fatigue before getting the fight to the ground, where he eventually caught Nogueira (34-8-1 MMA, 5-4 UFC) in the second round with an armbar. FORTALEZA, BRAZIL – On a night with eight submissions, Erick Silva ‘s was deemed the best – netting him an extra $50,000 in bonus money for “Submission of the Night.” Silva stopped Jason High with a first-round armbar to get back in the win column after a loss to Jon Fitch this past October, and he looked impressive in doing so. The welterweights met on the FUEL TV-televised main card of Saturday’s UFC on FUEL TV 10 event at Paulo Sarasate Arena in Fortaleza, Ceara, Brazil. High (16-4 MMA, 0-2 UFC) tried to take Silva (15-3 MMA, 3-2 UFC) down early, but Silva stuffed the attempt and a subsequent scramble on the ground found Silva on High’s back.
