When Charles Johnson and Carlos Mota stepped into the LFA cage, they put on a fight for the ages. The LFA 122 main event Friday toed the line between a high-level, technical striking match and an all-out-wild brawl. Johnson (11-2) finished Mota (6-1) with punches at 0:45 of Round 5 to retain the LFA flyweight championship. Both fighters had their moments in the bout, with the first four rounds closely contested. Mota, 26, showed some signs of brilliance and bloodied the champion midway through the bout.

Nick Browne made it four wins in a row on Friday night as he defeated Arthur Estrazulas to capture the vacant LFA lightweight title. The pair faced off in the main event of LFA 97, which took place at the Hartman Arena in Park City, Kansas. The event streamed on UFC Fight Pass. Browne (11-1) battled back and forth with Estrazulas (12-5) through five grueling rounds to earn the unanimous decision from the three cageside judges, who scored it 49-46, 49-46, 48-46 to become the promotion’s first new champion crowned in 2021

LFA will return to Utah in September, and a UFC veteran was set to headline the card against a Bellator vet. But Monday, Clay Collard (17-8 MMA, 1-3 UFC) re-signed with the UFC to fight Devonte Smith (10-1 MMA, 2-0 UFC) on short notice at UFC 241 later this month, news first reported by MMA Junkie . That takes him out of his planned LFA 75 main event against Arthur Estrazulas (11-4) and leaves LFA looking for a new headliner. LFA 75 is set for Sept. 6 at Maverik Center in West Valley City, Utah, near Salt Lake City. The main card airs on AXS TV

LFA looking California, feeling Minnesota for early summer events

LFA has started to set its schedule for the summer months with a pair of events in Minnesota and California in the weekends following Memorial Day. LFA 68 is set for May 31 at Mystic Lake Casino Hotel in Prior Lake, Minn., the promotion recently announced. And the following week, LFA 69 goes down at Morongo Outdoor Pavilion in Cabazon, Calif. Both events have main cards on AXS TV. In the LFA 68 headliner, two-time NCAA D-II national wrestling champion Raufeon Stots (11-1) takes on Brazilian prospect Gustavo Erak (21-4-1) in a bantamweight bout. In addition, Nate Jennerman (13-4) meets Luis Saldana (13-6) at featherweight in the co-feature and Brandon Jenkins (12-6) fights Le’Ville Simpson (8-4) at lightweight.

Brian Foster vs. Natan Schulte headlines PFL 5 in New York

The lineup is set for the Professional Fighters League’s next show, which will be its second straight in New York. PFL 5, like PFL 4 this past week, takes place at NYCB Live in Uniondale, N.Y., on Long Island. The main card airs on NBCSN following prelims on Facebook Live. The event will feature regular-season fights in the lightweight and light heavyweight divisions. In the headliner, Brian Foster (28-10) gets his second regular-season fight at lightweight when he meets Natan Schulte (12-3). Foster picked up four points in the 155-pound regular season at PFL 2.

However, his performance was on the less than thrilling side, so he might have some more work to do. Giagos (13-5), who was cut from the UFC in June 2015 after going 1-2 in the octagon, remained perfect in RFA competition when he bested Estrazulas (8-3) by unanimous decision in Friday’s lightweight headliner at Visalia Convention Center in Visalia, Calif.
