UFC 163 Fighter Bonuses: Anthony Perosh Leads $50,000 Award Winners with 14-Second KO

The Ultimate Fighting Championship handed out $50,000 performance bonuses to four fighters following UFC 163 on Saturday in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. Anthony Perosh, Sergio Moraes, Ian McCall and Iliarde Santos took home the bonus awards. Knockout of the Night honors went to Anthony Perosh , who knocked out Vinny Magalhaes in just 14 seconds. The Australian knocked Magalhaes down with a right hand and finished with a series of punches on the ground. The Submission of the Night award went to Sergio Moraes for his first round submission of Neil Magny. Moraes was able to get inside Magny’s reach advantage to get the fight to the ground. From there, he applied a triangle choke and forced The Ultimate Fighter alum to tap out. Fight of the Night was awarded to flyweights Ian McCall and Iliarde Santos . The fight kicked off the preliminary card that aired on FX. McCall was the quicker fighter, beating Santos to the punch throughout the fight. Santos pressed forward and had his moments, but in the end, McCall won by unanimous decision

Heading into UFC on Fox 8 on Saturday night in Seattle, the co-main event between Rory MacDonald and Jake Ellenberger stole the spotlight, but when it came time for the post-fight awards and bonuses, they were nowhere to be seen. UFC president Dana White handed out $50,000 bonuses to the award winners, and while main eventer UFC flyweight champion Demetrious Johnson was overshadowed in the lead-up, he walked away with the Submission of the Night bonus following an impressive five-round performance. Johnson dominated John Moraga for the majority of their fight, but once Moraga landed a stunner in the fourth round, causing Johnson’s nose to bleed, that’s when the champion stepped it up a notch. He quickly took Moraga to the mat in the final frame and diligently worked on him until he secured an armbar finish. Melvin Guillard talked about the importance of his fight at UFC on Fox 8, characterizing it as a job-saving performance when he knocked Mac Danzig out midway through their bout. Not only was the fight “job saving,” but it was also enriching, as Guillard earned the $50,000 Knockout of the Night bonus. The Fight of the Night honors went to Ed Herman and Trevor Smith , who fought on the FX televised prelim portion of the fight card. Both men are heavy hitters, and both men were hitting heavy on Saturday night, but neither could finish the other

LAS VEGAS – Earlier this week, in response to some recent complaints about fighter pay, UFC President Dana White floated the idea of eliminating fight-night bonuses and channeling that money to bigger base paydays for fighters. However, White today said at the pre-UFC 162 press conference that the organization isn’t currently close to implementing such a plan. Currently, the UFC gives out $50,000 bonuses for each event’s best knockout and best submission, as well as the best fight (which goes to both the winner and loser). The fight-night awards have gone as high as $129,000 in the past, and a handful of dual-award winners have banked some serious cash due to the bonus system. However, some fighters, both current and past, have recently complained about the difficulty in living on the salaries given to typical lower-level fighters, where base paydays can be $6,000 to show and an additional $6,000 to victorious. And on Monday, White offered a potentially significant adjustment. “You don’t like the structure? All right, we’ll pay the lower-level guys more money – no more f—ing bonuses,” he said.
