LAS VEGAS – After taking a half-dozen vicious kicks to the body and legs, Rafaello Oliveira knew he needed to get Edson Barboza to the mat. Unfortunately for him, Barboza was in no mood to grapple. By the second round, he could no longer stand, and Barboza took home the TKO. The lightweight bout was part of today's UFC 162 event at MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas. It aired on FX following additional prelims on Facebook and ahead of a main card on pay-per-view. The fight's stoppage came at the 1:44 of the second frame, though it might have ended at the end of the first, when Oliveira's leg began to bleed from over 20 of Barboza's kicks. In the opening frame, Barboza might even have landed the wheel kick that knocked out Terry Etim at UFC 142 (and earned him an ESPY nomination) had Oliveira not slightly ducked. The move wasn't enough to save him, however, from the onslaught of shins to his body and lead leg.

It's been a year since Rafaello Oliveira appeared in the UFC. His most recent fight wasn't a loss, so he wasn't cut and then asked to return for a fight with Edson Barboza at Saturday's UFC 162. He is, however, stepping in to replace John Makdessi in a fight most believe he will lose. Oliveira has gotten the axe once before in his time with the UFC, but fought his way back. This time, he aims to pull off a big upset. Unfortunately, the Brazilian's hands repeatedly have held back his career. The problems started two years ago, when he broke his right hand in a losing effort against Yves Edwards at UFC on Versus 6. He was supposed to fight Reza Madadi next, but re-injured his hand in training. Then he fought Yoislandy Izquierdo despite the same problem. Then he broke his hand two weeks prior to fighting "The Ultimate Fighter 15" winner Michael Chiesa , and that fight was scratched. An outsider might say Oliveira (15-5 MMA, 2-4 UFC) needs to reconsider his punching technique, get surgery, or take up soccer, but he is proceeding as if the setbacks are temporary distractions from his goal. "I considered surgery, but it wasn't necessary," he told MMAjunkie.com (www.mmajunkie.com). "I'm full healed, thankfully

As Brazilian striking specialist Edson Barboza (11-1 MMA, 5-1 UFC) puts the finishing touches on the preparations for his upcoming UFC 162 appearance, he's brimming with confidence. After all, 13 fights into his MMA career, the knockout artist believes he's finally found all the answers – or at least, "The Answer." "The first day I trained with these guys over here, I felt like I was at home," Barboza told MMAjunkie.com (www.mmajunkie.com) through an interpreter. "The whole team welcomed me in. The first day I boxed with coach Mark Henry, it was like I had met him 15 years ago. Ricardo Almeida and Renzo Gracie are such nice guys. Frankie Edgar is a great person. Everyone here helps each other. "Things were so great, I brought my partner Marlon Moraes to train here with us.

UFC officials announced the bout on Wednesday. Varner (21-7-1) returned to the Octagon at UFC 146 against Edson Barboza after competing outside of the organization for a five-year period. A heavy underdog heading into the fight, Varner defeated Barboza by technical knockout in the first round, logging one of the biggest upsets in 2012. He was defeated in his next fight by Joe Lauzon , but rebounded with a split decision win over Melvin Guillard in his last outing at UFC 155.
