In the main event, Shlemenko (50-7 MMA, 11-1 BMMA) struggled in the first-round, but rallied to submit Brennan Ward (9-2 MMA, 5-2 BMMA) with a second-round guillotine choke. It was Shlemenko’s third Bellator middleweight title defense. Earlier on in the card, Daniel Weichel (33-8 MMA, 2-0 BMMA) moved into the Season 10 featherweight tournament finals with a win over Matt Bessette (13-5 MMA, 4-1 BMMA). He’ll take on Desmond Green (11-2 MMA, 3-1 BMMA), who won his third straight by outpointing Will Martinez (9-3-1 MMA, 5-1 BMMA). And to open the main card, Brett Cooper (20-9 MMA, 7-4 BMMA) nearly was stopped in the first round by Kendall Grove (20-14 MMA, 1-1 BMMA)

Bellator’s Brett Cooper: You don’t get ‘amazing magical powers’ signing with UFC

Brett Cooper might have won two of three rounds against Bellator middleweight champ Alexander Shlemenko, but that’s no concession he wants to take. “A loss is a loss to me, and it’s disappointing,” Cooper told MMAjunkie. “So I’m looking to get back to winning and smashing some people. I guess, really, if you think about it, I might’ve been one round away from being world champion, and it was on short notice.” Cooper is at least another six rounds away from getting what would be his third crack at Shlemenko following two decision losses to the Russian champ, but he is not giving up on his dream to win Bellator gold.

Bellator 114′s Brennan Ward says fighting won’t define who he is, title or not

Brennan Ward likes to do many things. Chief among them are skating, surfing and snowboarding. Oh, and swearing. Ward can curse with the best of ‘em. He also likes to fight, of course. But one thing the Bellator MMA middleweight title challenge doesn’t plan on doing is changing his life outside the cage, no matter how things go down on Friday when he fights for the belt.

Bellator 114′s Kendall Grove: ‘Hang with crackheads, you’re going to be a crackhead’

MMA veteran Kendall Grove recently left Hawaii and spent his training camp for Friday’s Bellator 114 event at the famed Alliance MMA camp in San Diego. The reason, he said, is simple. “I always tell my students, ‘If you hang around with crackheads, you’re going to be a crackhead. If you hang out with successful people, you’re going to be a successful person,’” Grove said.

Bellator’s Season 10 middleweight tourney features Grove vs. Cooper, Marshall vs. Cramer

The field is set for Bellator MMA’s Season 10 four-man middleweight tournament, officials today announced. The first semifinal takes place March 28 with Kendall Grove (20-13 MMA, 1-0 BMMA) vs. Brett Cooper (19-9 MMA, 6-4 BMMA) at Bellator 114. The second semifinal takes place a week later, April 4, with Doug Marshall (18-7 MMA, 4-1 BMMA) vs. Dan Cramer (10-4 MMA, 7-2 BMMA) at Bellator 115.

Bellator signs middleweight champ Alexander Shlemenko to new deal

Bellator MMA has wrapped up one of its champions with a new deal, the promotion on Monday announced. Middleweight titleholder Alexander Shlemenko (49-7 MMA, 10-1 BMMA), from Russia, has agreed to a new deal with Bellator ahead of what will be his third title defense next month. Terms of the deal were not disclosed by the promotion.
