In the Spike TV-televised main event at Mid-America Center in Council Bluffs, Iowa, Douglas Lima made easy work of Rick Hawn to claim Bellator’s vacant 170-pound belt, which Ben Askren left behind when he signed with ONE FC. Lima dropped his opponent several times with low kicks, and eventually Hawn’s corner threw in the towel. Earlier in the card, Marcin Held submitted Derek Anderson and Patricky Freire stopped Derek Campos , and each advanced to the Season 10 lightweight tournament finals, where they’ll meet at the Bellator 120 pay-per-view next month. In a battle of past welterweight tournament winners, Douglas Lima (26-5 MMA, 8-1 BMMA) battered opponent Rick Hawn (18-3 MMA, 10-3 BMMA) en route to claiming Bellator MMA’s vacant welterweight title. The matchup served as the headlining bout of Friday’s Bellator 117 event, which took place at Mid-America Center in Council Bluffs, Iowa. The evening’s main card aired on Spike TV following prelims that streamed on Spike.com. The bigger Lima used his range early, striking from distance and setting the tone for the first frame. A low kick late in the round sent Hawn to his back, but Lima chose to back away and bring the action back to the feet

Julio Cesar Neves won’t turn 20 till next week. If we told you he had 15 fights by this point in career, it would be understandable if you were impressed. But try this on for size: Neves had 15 fights in 2013 alone – and he didn’t fight the last three and a half months of the year. The Brazilian returns tonight for his first fight outside his home country. Neves (28-0 MMA, 0-0 BMMA) makes his Bellator debut against Josh Arocho (13-12 MMA, 0-1 BMMA) at Bellator 117, which takes place at Mid-America Center in Council Bluffs, Iowa.

Patricky Freire, older brother to Bellator vet Patricio Freire, was stuck in a 1-4 skid. His bills piled up, sponsorships dried up, injuries kept him sidelines, the cost of living in Rio de Janeiro for his training was growing more expensive by the camp, and he ultimately lost longtime friend and fellow fighter Guilherme “Kioto” Rodrigues to more senseless violence in his native Brazil

Askren handed him his only Bellator loss, so redemption would be nice. But instead, Lima (25-5 MMA, 7-1 BMMA) has to settle for Rick Hawn (18-2 MMA, 10-2 BMMA) – a task he says he’s more than focused on, despite any longings for another crack at Askren.
