Bellator light heavyweight champ Emanuel Newton said he felt his legs weaken in the middle of a fight with Joey Beltran at this past Friday’s Bellator 124. It was an unfamiliar feeling made more acute by Beltran’s constant aggression. Considering what he chose to do the day of the fight, however, it’s no surprise he didn’t feel completely up to snuff. “I’m on this whole spiritual fix where I’m going off my spiritual energy in the fight instead of the energy in my flesh,” Newton told MMAjunkie Radio. “So I didn’t really eat that day

In fact, had the fight gone the distance, there may have been some tense moments waiting for the scorecards to be announced. But Newton changed all that in an instant in the third round. After trying several spinning backfists earlier in the fight, Newton (24-7-1 MMA, 7-1 BMMA) went after it one more time up against the fence. This time, he connected – and stopped Beltran (15-11 MMA, 2-2 BMMA) dead in his tracks, instantly knocking out the veteran fighter to defend his light heavyweight title. The fight aired on Spike TV from Compuware Arena in Plymouth Township, Mich., outside Detroit

The light heavyweights will clash in the promotion’s “Summer Series” tournament final. Right after they go at it, division champ Emanuel Newton puts his title up against Joey Beltran. So the McGeary-Anundson winner could be sitting cageside doing a potentially important bit of scouting. While Bellator is going away from its tournament format where tourney winners book title shots, the winner of tonight’s co-main event still will be in prime position to get a possible title shot. Check out Spike TV’s preview for the fight, which will air tonight during the main card, ahead of the televised event.
