Alexander Shlemenko Alexander Shlemenko has filed a lawsuit against the California State Athletic Commission following his three-year suspension and $10,000 fine for a failed post-fight drug test after his Bellator 133 knockout of Melvin Manhoef. The punishment – especially the three-year suspension – was the harshest penalty the commission has handed a fighter since it began regulating MMA in 2006. Shlemenko (51-9 MMA, 11-3 BMMA) tested positive for the steroid oxandrolone and oxandrolone metabolites as well as a testosterone-to-epitestosterone (T/E) ratio of 50-1 (the commission’s limit is 4-1). When contacted today by MMAjunkie, CSAC Executive Director Andy Foster said he had just received word of the lawsuit and was still looking into it. The basis of the suit, which was filed in Los Angeles on Aug. 28, is that CSAC officials failed to give proper notice of the type of hearing and sanctions they were seeking, failed to act consistently with previous situations involving failed drug tests, and applied penalties that the commission had not formally adopted as rules

Filed under: Bellator , Featured , News , Videos In a 7-0 vote, the California State Athletic Commission today suspended ex-Bellator middleweight champ Alexander Shlemenko for three years, fined him $10,000, and overturned his knockout win over Melvin Manhoef at Bellator 133. “Our job here is to protect the fighters, period,” said CSAC commissioner John Frierson during a hearing today in Los Angeles. “The guy that he knocked out, he could have killed him.” The CSAC this past week recommended the penalty, by far the harshest punishment of an MMA athlete since it started regulating the sport, when it found steroid oxandrolone and oxandrolone metabolites as well as a testosterone-to-epitestosterone (T/E) ratio of 50-1 in Shlemenko’s post-fight urine test. Shlemenko’s attorney, Howard Jacobs, who’s represented several MMA fighter accused of doping violations, argued the commission should throw out the sanctions, proposed by CSAC Executive Director Andy Foster, because it didn’t collect a “B” sample from Shlemenko’s urine at the Feb. 13 event at Save Mart Center in Fresno, Calif. Jacobs also accused the commission of violating an agreement with its official testing laboratory, the WADA-accredited UCLA Olympic Analytical Laboratory in Los Angeles, when it didn’t split the urine sample into an “A” and “B” sample.

This past month the California State Athletic Commission announced Shlemenko failed a Bellator 133 drug test but declined to reveal what was found in the fighter’s system, citing state privacy laws. However, MMAjunkie subsequently reported Shlemenko was found with a “significantly elevated” testosterone-to-epitestosterone ratio . Shlemenko (52-9 MMA, 12-3 BMMA) who lost the middleweight title this past September to Brandon Halsey, rebounded at Bellator 133 with a spinning backfist knockout of Melvin Manhoef (29-13-1 MMA, 1-2 BMMA). Alexander Shlemenko The California State Athletic Commission today confirmed that ex-Bellator MMA middleweight champion Alexander Shlemenko failed a pre-fight test stemming from his appearance this past month at Bellator 133. CSAC Executive Director Andy Foster told MMAjunkie that Shlemenko is suspended for two drug violations – one more than previously reported. Foster declined to reveal what was found in Shlemenko’s system, citing state privacy laws. Foster, however, said he will pursue the maximum punishment allowed by the commission given the “egregious” nature of the fighter’s offenses. Shlemenko has the right to appeal the suspension. On Monday night, MMAjunkie reported that Shlemenko was found with a “significantly elevated” testosterone-to-epitestosterone ratio

Alexander Shlemenko Former Bellator middleweight champion Alexander Shlemenko (52-9) has tested positive for an elevated testosterone-to-epitestosterone ratio and will soon be suspended by the California State Athletic Commission. MMAjunkie today confirmed with multiple sources close to the Russian fighter that Shlemenko failed his post-fight test following a Feb. 13 win over Melvin Manhoef at Bellator 133, which took place at Save Mart Center in Fresno, Calif. The sources spoke on the condition of anonymity because they are not authorized to publicly discuss such matter. CSAC officials weren’t immediately available for comment, but a Bellator representative confirmed the failed test, and Bellator MMA President Scott Coker did issue a brief statement to MMAjunkie

Alexander Shlemenko The highly anticipated Bellator 133 main event ended in the kind of incredible knockout everyone had hoped for, as Alexander Shlemenko (52-9 MMA, 12-3 BMMA) creamed Melvin Manhoef (29-13-1 MMA, 1-2 BMMA) with a spinning backfist for the second-round knockout victory .
