Bellator signs new light heavyweight champ Liam McGeary to contract extension

Emanuel Newton and Liam McGeary The biggest win of Liam McGeary ’s career has turned into a lucrative one. McGeary (10-0 MMA, 7-0 BMMA) went the distance for the first time in his pro career this past month and came out on top against light heavyweight champion Emanuel Newton (25-8-1 MMA, 8-2 BMMA) at Bellator 134 to take the title. In response, Bellator recently announced the unbeaten Brit has signed a multi-fight, multi-year contract extension with the promotion.

Ex-Bellator champ Emanuel Newton fails marijuana test, suspended three months

Emanuel Newton Emanuel Newton , who lost his Bellator MMA light-heavyweight title to Liam McGeary at this past month’s Bellator 134 event, is now suspended following a failed drug test due to marijuana. The Mohegan Tribe Department of Athletic Regulations, which regulated the event on Feb. 28 at Mohegan Sun Arena in Uncasville, Conn., suspended Newto 90 days and fined him $3,000. TheMMAReport.com first reported the failed test. The former champ must also submit a clean drug test when he reapplies for a fight license, the report stated. The report cited MTDAR Director Mike Mazzulli, who said a post-fight urine sample from Newton aroused suspicion.

Emanuel Newton and Liam McGeary Liam McGeary didn’t look as happy as one might expect after winning the Bellator light heavyweight title . But according to the new champ, he was trying to figure out how he had even gotten to the scorecards against champ Emanuel Newton (25-8-1 MMA, 8-2 BMMA). “I don’t know how he managed to get out of that kimura in the first round,” McGeary (10-0 MMA, 7-0 BMMA), 32, told MMAjunkie Radio. “His arm popped and as he spun, he kind of popped back into place, and I was like, ‘You lucky bastard.’” McGeary, 32, had provided no work for judges in nine previous fights, so he was a little bit lost. As the scores were read, he found himself daydreaming about what had just taken place in the headliner of Bellator 134, which took place this past Friday at Mohegan Sun Arena in Uncasville, Conn.

Triumph United president explains his side of ‘King Mo’ dustup

The founder of MMA apparel company Triumph United is challenging Muhammed Lawal to a kickboxing match to settle the score after the two nearly came to blows this past week at a casino. Hans Molenkamp on Monday told MMAjunkie that Lawal harassed him and longtime friend Quinton “Rampage” Jackson online long before an incident prior to this past Friday’s Bellator 134 event. And while he said he’s no match for the fighter in a full MMA match, a striking engagement suits Molenkamp fine.

Bellator 134 took place at Mohegan Sun Arena in Uncasville, Conn., and the five-fight main card aired on Spike TV. In the headliner, a new champion was crowned when Liam McGeary (10-0 MMA, 7-0 BMMA) edged by reigning light-heavyweight titleholder Emanuel Newton (25-8-1 MMA, 8-2 BMMA) in a submission-filled five-rounder (check out the full Bellator 134 event recap ). Earlier on the card, two notables picked up wins as Muhammed Lawal (15-4 MMA, 7-3 BMMA) moved up to heavyweight to beat Cheick Kongo (22-10-2 MMA, 4-2 BMMA), and Paul Daley (36-13-2 MMA, 2-0 BMMA) returned to Bellator and the U.S. to batter welterweight Andre Santos (37-10 MMA, 1-1 BMMA).
