Ken Shamrock gets $2,500 fine, license revocation for Bellator 148 drug failure

UFC Hall of Famer Ken Shamrock agreed to a settlement with the Texas Department of Licensing and Regulation after failing his post-fight drug test at Bellator 149. As part of the settlement, Shamrock’s combative sports license in Texas is now revoked, and he is required to pay a $2,500 fine, according to a copy of the order obtained by MMAjunkie via public records request. Bellator’s ‘Kimbo Slice’ settles with Texas commission following failed steroid test

Two months in advance of his Bellator 158 rematch with James Thompson , Kevin “ Kimbo Slice ” Ferguson has settled with Texas’ athletic commission following a failed steroid test. Slice agreed to a $2,500 fine and the revocation of his Texas fight license, which originally was slated to expire on March 4, 2017. He also agreed to waive his right to a hearing and is expected to remain in compliance with “all laws and rules” of the Texas Department of Licensing and Regulation, which oversees the Texas Combative Sports Program

In what was a frightening and apparently near-fatal situation, Harris (2-1 MMA, 0-1 BMMA) was stretchered out of the cage after what looked like a punch from Slice (6-2 MMA, 2-0 BMMA) sent him crashing face-first into the canvas to end the heavyweight contest by third-round TKO . Harris wasn’t the first combat athlete to be taken away on a stretcher, but the outright exhaustion showcased in the bout was assumed to be the primary factor. In the days following the fight, however, it was reported by MMAFighting that Harris was overcome by a kidney issue in the fight and experienced cardiac arrest en route to the hospital. Harris said he required resuscitation. Dhafir “Dada 5000” Harris and Kevin “Kimbo Slice” Ferguson “I was dead,” Harris said on The Dan LeBatard Show.

Ken Shamrock claims positive test caused by pituitary medication, asks for more time

UFC Hall of Famer and Bellator fighter Ken Shamrock told an investigator for the Texas Department of Licensing and Regulation his positive Bellator 149 drug test was caused by medications taken for a pituitary condition, according to documents obtained today by MMAjunkie. The TDLR found Shamrock (28-17-2 MMA, 0-2 BMMA) tested positive for two banned substances – the steroid nandrolone and opioid methadone – and came back with an elevated testosterone-to-epitestosterone (T/E) ratio following a contested first-round TKO loss to Royce Gracie (15-2-3 MMA, 1-0 BMMA) in a trilogy fight at the Spike-televised event on Feb. 19 at Houston’s Toyota Center. The UFC Hall of Famer apparently was caught off guard, however, by his positive drug test. When contacted by an investigator for the TDLR, he admitted to taking several unspecified medications, but indicated they were to treat a legitimate condition. “Respondent stated he is certain the results are not from an illegal substance and believes the results stem from medications prescribed to him from his doctor to control swollen pituitary glands in his brain,” the TDLR’s Jason DeBord wrote in a report submitted as part of an investigation into Shamrock’s positive test

Ken Shamrock Ken Shamrock and Kevin “ Kimbo Slice ” Ferguson tested positive for the same steroid following their appearances at Bellator 149 this past month. Shamrock (28-17-2 MMA, 0-2 BMMA), 52, and Slice (6-2 MMA, 2-0 BMMA), 42, were found with the steroid nandrolone, according to urine test results released by the Texas Department of Licensing and Regulation, which oversees the Texas Combative Sports program that oversaw the Feb. 19 event at Houston’s Toyota Center. Shamrock also tested positive for methadone, a synthetic opioid used to treat heroin addicts, following his first-round TKO loss to Royce Gracie in the event’s Spike-televised headliner. Shamrock and Slice each face up to a one-year suspension and $5,000 fine. The TDLR is offering the fighters a settlement – good until March 31 – for “coming into compliance” that offers a reduced punishment of a $3,000 and a license revocation, records show.
