Although submissions happened at a slightly lessened rate statistically at the top of the sport, there were plenty of awesome finishes in 2017 that stemmed from memorable bits of grappling. There were a number of first to take place in the UFC specifically over the past 12 months, and some marquee bouts ended in submissions, as well. With 2017 about to come to a close, everyone is debating which finish most deserves “Submission of the Year” honors.

Dufresne (6-2 MMA, 1-0 BMMA) stepped in as an injury replacement for Julia Budd (8-2 MMA, 2-0 BMMA) in a fight meant to decide Bellator’s inaugural women’s 145-pound champion. Once Budd pulled out, however, the promotion changed the fight with Coenen (23-7 MMA, 2-1 BMMA) to a non-title affair. Marloes Coenen and Alexis Dufresne The call to fight Coenen came with just two weeks to prepare after Dufresne had taken a 16-month layoff from the sport to give birth. Dufresne was five pounds overweight for the fight, which ruffled the feathers of her opponent

Invicta FC featherweight champion Cristiane Justino ’s dream of competing for the UFC became a reality on May 14 at “UFC 198: Werdum vs. Miocic” in Curitiba, Parana, Brazil. Competing in front of her hometown fans, the 30-year-old “Cyborg” destroyed former Invicta FC flyweight title challenger Leslie Smith early in the first round of a 140-pound catchweight contest. Cristiane Justino and Leslie Smith Justino (16-1 MMA, 1-0 UFC) previously campaigned for a fight against former UFC women’s bantamweight champion Ronda Rousey for more than three years. When Rousey lost her title in November, plans for the “superfight” were postponed indefinitely, and it was unclear if and when Justino would ever get a chance to step into the octagon

After his Bellator 155 middleweight title shot against champ Rafael Carvalho , Manhoef may not want to go the distance ever again. The feared striker seemed to have a win and his first major title in the bag after 24 minutes on Friday at CenturyLink Arena in Boise, Idaho. But after his Spike-televised main event, Manhoef (30-13 MMA, 2-2 BMMA) watched Carvalho (13-1 MMA, 4-0 BMMA) retain his title with a controversial split-decision win. A fight that was expected to deliver fireworks instead turned out to be a rather lackluster affair, as Bellator middleweight champ Rafael Carvalho (13-1 MMA, 4-0 BMMA) retained his belt with a split-decision win over Melvin Manhoef (30-13 MMA, 2-2 BMMA). The contest served as the main event of Friday’s Bellator 155, which took place at CenturyLink Arena in Boise, Idaho.

Joey Beltran ’s career has been up and down in a few different ways. The Bellator fighter has bounced back and forth between wins and losses in recent years while also bouncing between heavyweight, light heavyweight and middleweight. Beltran (17-12 MMA, 3-4 BMMA) fights tonight at Bellator 155 against Chase Gormley (12-5 MMA, 0-1 BMMA) in his first heavyweight bout since January 2012 – not counting a 210-pound catchweight bout with Quinton Jackson in November 2013.
