Bellator continued to make noise in the MMA world in 2017, putting on a number of high-profile and notable events that captured the attention of fight fans more than ever before. Although it wasn’t its busiest year in terms of volume of events, Bellator put on arguably more big fights over the past 12 fights than any year prior. Now it’s time to relive some of those moments in picture form. The flourishing organization put on four events in the first two months of the year.

CSAC denies Josh Thomson appeal to overturn Bellator 172 knockout loss to Patricky Freire

The California State Athletic Commission quickly denied Josh Thomson ’s appeal to overturn a knockout loss to Patricky Freire at Bellator 172. CSAC executive director Andy Foster recommended against overturning the decision, prompting a commissioner to propose a motion denying the appeal.

Filed under: Bellator , News Bellator lightweight Josh Thomson wants the California State Athletic Commission to overturn his knockout loss to Patricky Freire in the headliner of Bellator 172, MMAjunkie has learned. CSAC Executive Director Andy Foster confirmed Thomson’s appeal request after veteran referee “Big” John McCarthy on Wednesday told MMAjunkie Radio he will offer his testimony during the process. Thomson also told MMAjunkie he is seeking a no-contest ruling and declined further comment. Officially, the Feb. 18 bout is on the books as a knockout win for Freire (17-8 MMA, 10-7 BMMA), who caught Thomson (22-9 MMA, 2-1 BMMA) with a vicious uppercut early in the fight’s second round in the Spike-televised headliner at SAP Center in San Jose, Calif. (watch the highlights above). McCarthy on Wednesday said he stopped the bout based on Freire’s strike, but he wasn’t sure whether a knockdown that immediately preceded it was caused by a legal blow or inadvertent clash of heads.

When Mitrione was scrapped from the card due to kidney stones , Ortiz said he offered to save the Spike-televised card last month at SAP Center in San Jose, Calif. “I looked over at (Bellator President) Scott Coker, and this was probably two hours before the fight, and he said, ‘You know what? If you’d told me three hours ago, we would have been working on it,’” Ortiz told MMAjunkie Radio. Ortiz (19-12-1 MMA, 3-1 BMMA) was among three rumored replacements for Mitrione that included Chael Sonnen (29-15-1 MMA, 0-1 BMMA) and Oli Thompson (17-10 MMA, 0-2 BMMA)

That list includes cutman Jacob “Stitch” Duran, who, after being personally contacted by Emelianenko (36-4 MMA, 0-0 BMMA) – in English, no less – the week before he and Mitrione (11-5 MMA, 2-0 BMMA) were supposed to square off, was looking forward to working closely with the iconic fighter ahead of his Bellator debut. “I had gotten a call the Saturday before from Jerry Millen, who is the adviser for Fedor, and he asked if I was going to be in San Jose, and I said, ‘Yeah, of course.’ And he says, ‘Hold on, somebody wants to talk to you,’” Duran told MMAjunkie Radio

As we now know, Coker made the tough call to scrap the main event but not the entire show, elevating the Patricky Freire-Josh Thomson fight to the headliner slot. Chael Sonnen , who served as a commentator on the Spike-televised event, commended Coker for the way things were handled . “I thought Coker really went to the next best thing,” Sonnen told MMAjunkie.
