Bellator continued to make noise in the MMA world in 2017, putting on a number of high-profile and notable events that captured the attention of fight fans more than ever before. Although it wasn’t its busiest year in terms of volume of events, Bellator put on arguably more big fights over the past 12 fights than any year prior. Now it’s time to relive some of those moments in picture form. The flourishing organization put on four events in the first two months of the year.

And that business had a lot to do with smashing up McDermott’s face, leaving him a bloody mess in the Bellator 173 light heavyweight main event on Friday in front of a friendly crowd in Northern Ireland. McGeary (12-1 MMA, 9-1 BMMA) survived a quick knockdown by McDermott (7-5 MMA, 0-1 BMMA), then got a TKO when the doctor stopped the fight 66 seconds into the second round. Bellator 173 took place Friday at SSE Arena Belfast in Northern Ireland. The night’s main card airsed on Spike via tape delay in the U.S. Also on the card, Conor McGregor teammate James Gallagher (6-0 MMA, 3-0 BMMA) tore through Kirill Medvedovsky (7-4 MMA, 0-2 BMMA) for a first-round submission win, then called out fellow featherweight A.J

Bellator returns to Belfast for the second time in less than 90 days for Friday’s Bellator 173 fight card. Like the promotion’s first foray into Ireland, Bellator 169, this event is a co-promotion with BAMMA. In the main event, former Bellator light heavyweight champion Liam McGeary looks to get back in the win column after losing his title to Phil Davis in November. Hopefully McGeary was not training for a particular opponent; the man he faces, Brett McDermott , is the third fighter to be penciled in to face McGeary since the ex-champ was booked for this event in January.

Here we go again: Filipovic out, Liam McGeary now meets Brett McDermott in Bellator 173 main event

For the second time in 48 hours, Bellator 173 headliner Liam McGeary has a new opponent for Friday’s card. On Monday, Bellator officials announced that Chris Fields had been forced out of the Bellator 173 main event against former light heavyweight champion McGeary (11-1 MMA, 8-1 BMMA) and would be replaced by promotional newcomer Vladimir Filipovic (8-2 MMA, 0-0 BMMA). But today, Filipovic is out, too. Stepping up on two days’ notice to take his place will be Brett McDermott (7-4 MMA, 0-0 BMMA), who like Filipovic will be making his promotional debut. A Bellator official confirmed the change to MMAjunkie today and said visa issues for Filipovic were the culprit for taking him off the card.
