Bellator continued to make noise in the MMA world in 2017, putting on a number of high-profile and notable events that captured the attention of fight fans more than ever before. Although it wasn’t its busiest year in terms of volume of events, Bellator put on arguably more big fights over the past 12 fights than any year prior. Now it’s time to relive some of those moments in picture form. The flourishing organization put on five events between March and April of this past year. That not only led to Budd (10-2, 4-0 BMMA) winning the inaugural Bellator women’s featherweight title with relative ease, but the retirement of Coenen (23-8, 2-2 BMMA), who called it quits on a lengthy and prestigious career after a fourth-round TKO loss in the Bellator 174 main event. Bellator 174 took place Friday at Winstar World Casino in Thackerville, Okla.

Bellator 174 results: Julia Budd wins featherweight title vs. Marloes Coenen, who retires

Bellator 174 resulted in the addition of a new champion and the loss of a pioneer of women’s MMA. Julia Budd dominated Marloes Coenen for three rounds before finally finishing her in the fourth and winning the inaugural Bellator women’s featherweight title by TKO. “It’s been a long road,” Budd said. “I don’t think anyone thought it would get to this.” Coenen (23-8, 2-2 BMMA), the former Strikeforce women’s bantamweight champion, announced her retirement in her post-fight interview after nearly 17 years as a professional mixed martial artist. Budd (10-2, 4-0 BMMA) opened the first round with a nice takedown, but it was Coenen who looked more comfortable on the ground.

Kendall Grove-Mike Rhodes, Joe Taimanglo-Steve Garcia scratched from Bellator 174

A pair of main card fights have been scratched from Friday’s Bellator 174 lineup. The catchweight bout between Kendall Grove (23-16 MMA, 4-3 BMMA) and Mike Rhodes (10-4 MMA, 0-0 BMMA), as well as the bantamweight contest between Joe Taimanglo (23-7-1 MMA, 6-3 BMMA) and Steve Garcia (7-1 MMA, 5-1 BMMA), have been removed from the card after Rhodes and Taimanglo missed weight for their respective contests this morning. MMAjunkie today confirmed the news with Bellator officials citing an inability for the athletes to agreeable terms for a catchweight.

Bellator has been waiting for almost a year to crown its first women’s featherweight champion. On Friday, the promotion finally will do it when Julia Budd and Marloes Coenen meet in Bellator 174’s main event. Budd and Coenen initially were set to fight for the title at Bellator 155 in May 2016, but an injury forced Budd from the contest. Alexis Dufresne replaced her on the card, stepping in to face Coenen in a non-title bout on less than two weeks’ notice

On Friday, Coenen fights for a title, while Dufresne appears on the Bellator 174 prelims. Dufresne says she’s not bothered by the card placement. “I still get paid the same, so I’m OK,” Dufresne told MMAjunkie. Dufresne insists she hopes to win a title but isn’t all that concerned about when it happens

Mike Rhodes steps in on short notice, faces Kendall Grove at Friday’s Bellator 174 event

Three-time UFC veteran Mike Rhodes (10-4 MMA, 0-0 BMMA) is stepping in on less than one week’s notice to face longtime veteran Kendall Grove (23-16 MMA, 4-3 BMMA) in the co-main event of Friday’s Bellator 174. MMAjunkie today confirmed with Bellator officials that Rhodes has agreed to replace Grove’s original opponent, fellow middleweight Chris Honeycutt (9-1 MMA, 5-1 BMMA), on Friday’s card, which takes place at WinStar World Casino and Resort in Thackerville, Okla.
