Matt Mitrione: Chael Sonnen ‘a tough fight for Fedor,’ defends Frank Mir’s loss

Matt Mitrione must get through the winner of Saturday’s Bellator 199 main event between Ryan Bader and Muhammed Lawal first, but he has a tough time bottling his excitement when looking ahead to a potential rematch with Fedor Emelianenko in the finals of the Bellator Heavyweight World Grand Prix. Mitrione (13-5 MMA, 4-0 BMMA) already punched his ticket to the tournament semifinals with a with over Roy Nelson at Bellator 194 in February. He will fight the winner of Bader (24-5 MMA, 2-0 BMMA) and Lawal (21-6 MMA, 10-4 BMMA) next, with the winner advancing to the finals where either Emelianenko (37-5 MMA, 1-1 BMMA) or Chael Sonnen (30-15-1 MMA, 2-1 BMMA) will be waiting. In his most recent fight prior to tournament, Mitrione beat Emelianenko by first-round knockout at Bellator NYC in June. He said he was pleased to see the former PRIDE champion win his opening-round matchup against Frank Mir at Bellator 198, and if each man can tally one more win, a rematch will be made.

Gerald Harris once could never see himself fighting for any organization but the UFC. But now with a second life in Bellator, he can’t imagine being happier anywhere else. “For me to be able to go to organization that supports everything that I do – other than making all of these damn kids – I’m really happy,” Harris recently told MMAjunkie Radio. Harris, a 38-year-old who appeared on “The Ultimate Fighter 7” and ultimately went 3-1 in the UFC, left the octagon sooner than expected.

Scott Coker open to Frank Mir fighting in ACB, but timing must be right

Bellator President Scott Coker still plans to promote former UFC heavyweight champion Frank Mir, , whom he signed to a multi-fight contract. But Coker told MMAjunkie he’s open to the idea of Mir (18-12 MMA, 0-1 BMMA) competing overseas – as long as his engagements don’t compete with Bellator’s interests. “I haven’t really talked to him about what he wants to do,” Coker said. “But if the timing works out and he wanted to fight, I have no problem.

Bellator opening odds: Lines set for Fedor Emelianenko vs. Chael Sonnen

One is a heavyweight legend, and one is a veteran light heavyweight who’s faced a who’s who of MMA notables in multiple divisions. But who wins? We’ll found out in the semifinal round of Bellator’s yearlong heavyweight grand prix when Fedor Emelianenko (37-5 MMA, 1-1 BMMA) meets fellow opening-round tourney winner Chael Sonnen (30-15-1 MMA, 2-1 BMMA). The opening odds are out for the matchup, which was set this past weekend when Emelianenko scored a first-round TKO win over Frank Mir in Bellator 198’s headliner. Sonnen had already punched his ticket to the semifinals after picking up a decision win over “Rampage” Jackson in January. Related Fedor Emelianenko comments on FBI interview, addresses Chael Sonnen Now, they’re likely to meet on the East Coast – as part of an expected “stacked card” – though an official date isn’t set for their Final Four matchup.
