Bellator free fight: Gegard Mousasi batters Rory MacDonald in champ-vs.-champ showdown

Former Bellator middleweight champion Gegard Mousasi has plans to reunite with the title when he takes on Douglas Lima on May 9 at Bellator 242. Welterweight champion Lima will step up to 185 pounds to tussle with Mousasi for the now vacant middleweight title in San Jose, and both men have a common opponent on their recent records. Lima defeated Rory MacDonald by unanimous decision to capture the welterweight title at Bellator 232 last October, but when Mousasi welcomed MacDonald’s challenge for the middleweight strap he held back at Bellator 206, his performance was even more emphatic. Mousasi delivered a one-sided beatdown to “The Red King” as he punished an ambitious Imanari roll attempt from the Canadian to finish him with a barrage of elbows in the second round.

Douglas Lima is hopeful he meets Michael Page in the semifinals of the Bellator welterweight grand prix, but he doesn’t view “MVP” beating Paul Daley in his first-round matchup as any sort of guarantee. Lima (30-7 MMA, 12-3 BMMA) advanced through the quarterfinals when he beat Andrey Koreshkov (20-3 MMA, 11-3 BMMA) by fifth-round submission in their tournament quarterfinal bout at Bellator 206 in September. The bracket calls for him to fight the winner of Page (13-0 MMA, 9-0 BMMA) vs. Daley (40-16-2 MMA, 6-3 BMMA), who are expected to meet early next year. The fighters went toe-to-toe over the course of three rounds and left each other bloodied and bruised. Aldana was deemed the most active competitor and as a result was awarded the win by split decision when the epic encounter was all over.

Plenty is on the line in the lightweight division on Saturday. Lightweight champion Khabib Nurmagomedov (26-0 MMA, 10-0 UFC) takes on former two-division champ Conor McGregor (21-3 MMA, 9-1 UFC) in the UFC 229 main event. McGregor used to rule the roost at 155 pounds, but now that’s Nurmagomedov’s home spot – and McGregor wants it back. A McGregor win would mean another changing of the guard at the top of the 155-pound division.

This past weekend, Bellator made a splash by putting one of its biggest cards exclusively on new streaming partner DAZN. Bellator 206 was headlined by a champion-vs.-champion superfight that saw middleweight champ Gegard Mousasi dominate welterweight title holder Rory MacDonald. Moving forward, all of Bellator’s shows will be offered up on DAZN. Bellator’s partnership with a streaming service coincides with the UFC’s upcoming move to ESPN, which will see a majority of its events stream on ESPN+. What this all means for MMA fans is having to come out of pocket more to enjoy fights and content
