Dustin Poirier at UFC 242 Many people believed Dustin Poirier (25-6 MMA, 17-5 UFC) might be the man to push UFC lightweight champion Khabib Nurmagomedov (28-0 MMA, 12-0 UFC) to his limits, but once again it was “The Eagle” who flew highest as he retained his belt. After implementing his overwhelming grappling game over the first two rounds, Nurmagomedov finally made the most of his positioning in the third.

‘Bellator Featherweight Grand Prix Countdown,’ No. 3: ‘Now it’s time to get down to business’

Bellator 226 marked the start of the eagerly anticipated featherweight grand prix as half of the 16-man tournament field kicked off the first round of competition in four elimination bouts. Emmanuel Sanchez was the first man to punch his ticket to the quarterfinals as he handed a devastated Tywan Claxton the first loss of his career via second-round submission. And the American was joined by Dublin-based Portuguese contender Pedro Carvalho , who produced a second-round submission of his own to eliminate Sam Sicilia from the tournament. Undefeated Hungarian Adam Borics impressed as he dismantled former featherweight champion Pat Curran ’s legs before finishing him with punches, while Derek Campos dominated but couldn’t finish uber-tough former champ Daniel Straus . The stars of Bellator 226 paid tribute to the newest member of the “Bellator family” as they hailed the signing of former Strikeforce, Invicta and UFC women’s featherweight champion Cris Cyborg . Cyborg (21-2) was introduced to the crowd last weekend at SAP Center in San Jose, Calif., and had the chance to meet some of her adoring fans as the Brazilian star made official her arrival as a Bellator fighter. In a special video by Bellator broadcast partner DAZN, a host of Bellator 226 fighters shared their takes on Cyborg’s arrival, with two-division champ Ryan Bader leading the plaudits. “I love seeing Cyborg coming over,” Bader said. “She knows what she’s getting into. She’s worked with Scott Coker in the past, and it’s a great atmosphere (with) a lot of tough fights for her.

SAN JOSE, Calif. – Portuguese featherweight contender Pedro Carvalho kicked off his Bellator featherweight grand prix campaign with an impressive submission finish of respected veteran Sam Sicilia, but admitted he took away a lot more from the contest than just a win. Carvalho (11-3 MMA, 4-0 BMMA) forced the tap from Sicilia (16-10 MMA, 2-2 BMMA) with a second-round rear-naked choke at Bellator 226 to claim the victory and punch his ticket to the quarterfinals of the grand prix tournament, but he revealed it was also a performance that convinced his coach John Kavanagh to award him his Brazilian jiu-jitsu purple belt

SAN JOSE, Calif. – Unbeaten Hungarian ace Adam Borics delivered the goods once again as he handed former Bellator featherweight champion Pat Curran his first stoppage loss and moved on to the quarterfinals of the Bellator featherweight grand prix tournament. Borics (14-0 MMA, 5-0 BMMA) finished Curran (23-9 MMA, 13-6 BMMA) with strikes with one second left in the first round at Bellator 226 to extend his perfect professional record and add another big name to his growing resumé. And the 26-year-old Hungarian said he ignored the calls from his corner to get back to his feet after dropping Curran with a flying knee as he instead proceeded to follow his man to the mat and unload a barrage of ground and pound that forced referee Frank Trigg to end the contest with one second to go in the opening frame. Campos (20-9 MMA, 9-7 BMMA) defeated former champion Straus (26-9 MMA, 12-6 BMMA) via a dominant unanimous decision at the SAP Center to progress to the quarterfinals of the Bellator featherweight grand prix, but said that the win not only saw him progress in the tournament, it also secured his decision to continue his career as he snapped a three-fight losing skid that left him contemplating retirement.
