Tony Johnson ready to prioritize MMA over boxing after viral knockout of Joe Schilling

TEMECULA, Calif. — Tony Johnson has had one hell of a long road to become an overnight sensation. The 36-year-old San Jose, Calif., native, who also boasts an 8-1 boxing record, has been doing this for quite some time – he competed in Strikeforce all the way back in 2008 – but only now is he starting to get some recognition for his efforts. Johnson’s wild knockout of kickboxing standout Joe Schilling in the middleweight main-card opener of Bellator 229 on Friday night went viral. And while the clip might be the first you’ve seen of him, that’s in fact five wins in a row for Johnson, who also earned a victory on Dana White’s Contender Series this past summer. So you can’t blame Johnson, really, for taking a minute to bask in the attention after a long and winding road in the sport, which started way back in 2007.

Bellator kicked off a busy month on Friday with Bellator 229, which took place at Pechanga Casino Resort in Temecula, Calif., with a main card that aired on Paramount following prelims on MMA Junkie. Lorenz Larkin (21-7 MMA, 3-2 BMMA) continued his run of success in the Bellator cage when he extended his winning streak to three fights with a split decision victory over former champ Andrey Koreshkov (22-4 MMA, 13-4 BMMA), who has now lost two of his past three. Bellator 229 will not go down as one of the better nights in Joe Schilling ’s combat sports career. Schilling (4-6 MMA, 3-3 BMMA), the former kickboxing champion turned MMA fighter, suffered a brutal third-round knockout loss to Tony Johnson (9-2 MMA, 2-0 BMMA) on Friday at Bellator 229, which took place at Pechanga Resort & Casino in Temecula, Calif., and aired on Paramount following prelims on MMA Junkie. The fight was seemingly going his way until Johnson landed a devastating fight-ending shot that put the lights out. After the loss, Schilling revealed in a social media video that he barely made it to the cage to compete. “I’m having a hard time making this video to be honest because it kind of goes against everything I stand for,” Schilling said. “But I do have some things I need to let out of the bag.

Andrey Koreshkov believes the judges got it wrong when declaring him the loser of the Bellator 229 main event against Lorenz Larkin. Koreshkov (22-4 MMA, 13-4 BMMA) came out on the wrong end of a narrow split decision against Larkin (21-7 MMA, 3-2 BMMA) on Friday in the welterweight headliner, which took place at Pechanga Resort & Casino in Temecula, Calif. It was a highly competitive fight, and ultimately the result did not go in his favor. And that was fortunate for him on Friday night, because the way he sees it, if his fight with Andrey Koreshkov happened when he was breaking in a decade ago, there’s a real chance he would not have gotten the nod in his Bellator 229 main event.

Keri Melendez hopes Bellator 229 win builds toward start of strawweight division

TEMECULA, Calif. – Keri Melendez is a unique commodity on the Bellator roster in that she continues to be booked in strawweight bouts when the promotion has no formal division. Melendez (4-0 MMA, 4-0 BMMA) picked up another win in the weight class on Friday when she defeated Mandy Polk (6-5 MMA, 0-1 BMMA) by unanimous decision at Bellator 229, which took place at Pechanga Resort & Casino, and aired on Paramount following prelims on MMA Junkie. Thus far, Bellator only officially carries women’s featherweight and women’s flyweight classes. Melendez would like to see another added, and she hopes her latest victory contributes to the process of making it happen.
