Neiman Gracie ’s relentless pursuit of a submission finish eventually proved successful, as he finished Jon Fitch in the co-main event of Bellator 246 to claim a notable scalp in the promotion’s talent-rich welterweight division. Faced with seasoned veteran Fitch, Gracie found it tough to put away the longtime contender, who defended admirably to stem the ceaseless tide of submission attempts from the Brazilian in Round 1. But, eventually, Gracie found a crack in Fitch’s defenses and exploited it.

One year after his bid to capture the Bellator featherweight title fell short on the scorecards, Juan Archuleta moved back down to bantamweight and picked up the vacant 135-pound title instead. Archuleta had gone to the scorecards in a losing effort against 145-pound champion Patricio Freire in the Bellator featherweight grand prix in 2019 and, with his route to a rematch blocked by the ongoing tournament, “The Spaniard” dropped down to 135 pounds to challenge for the vacant title.

UNCASVILLE, Conn. – Liz Carmouche is willing to battle it out with Bellator’s best flyweights to get a crack at the title. Carmouche (14-7 MMA, 1-0 BMMA) made good in her promotional debut, submitting DeAnna Bennett in the third round at Bellator 246 at Mohegan Sun Arena. Initially anticipating that a win over Bennett could lead to a title shot against champion Ilima-Lei Macfarlane, Carmouche is also open to the idea of a potential flyweight grand prix that has been previously discussed by Bellator president Scott Coker.

UNCASVILLE, Conn. – Daniel Madrid was in no doubt that he had done enough to win his fight at Bellator 246, even though the judges were split on the verdict. Madrid (18-6 MMA, 1-0 BMMA) earned a split-decision victory over Pat Casey (6-3 MMA, 2-2 BMMA) in their middleweight preliminary card bout at Mohegan Sun Arena, but the debuting “Demigod” said he knew he’d done more than enough when he was waiting for the verdict. “I wasn’t nervous. I was a little confused, because one gave it 29-28, then the other gave it 30-27 on the second one and it kinda threw me,” he told reporters, including MMA Junkie, after his victory.

But he’s never had a finish quite like the one he had Saturday night. In his biggest career fight, and as a late replacement, Diggs (9-0 MMA, 2-0 BMMA) earned a technical submission over veteran opposition when Campos (20-11 MMA, 9-9 BMMA) went out due to a rear-naked choke at 4:59 of the final round in the main-card opener.

Ty Gwerder plays down talk of rustiness after Bellator 246 win: ‘It’s all in your head’

UNCASVILLE, Conn. – Ty Gwerder put the pedal to the metal in the gym as soon as COVID restrictions lifted and, when he was granted the opportunity to fight, he didn’t disappoint. Gwerder (5-1 MMA, 1-1 BMMA) returned to action on the preliminary card at Bellator 246 at Mohegan Sun Arena, and marked his first appearance of 2020 with his maiden Bellator win as he defeated British middleweight George Tokkos (4-2 MMA, 0-2 BMMA) via third-round TKO. Despite the enforced time on the sidelines and limited access to his gym, Gwerder said he didn’t feel any rustiness as he made his first appearance in more than nine months. “Honestly, I don’t really believe in the whole rust thing,” Gwerder told reporters, including MMA Junkie, backstage after his victory.
