Emmanuel Sanchez left no doubt when he squared off with Daniel Weichel for the second time. Looking to avenge his split-decision loss from over four years ago, Sanchez (20-4 MMA, 12-3 BMMA) met Weichel (40-12 MMA, 9-4 BMMA) in the grand prix quarterfinals at Bellator 252 , which took place at Mohegan Sun Arena in Uncasville, Conn. Both men came out firing, and engaged in some heated exchanges on the feet. Sanchez found a home for his right hand on numerous occasions as he landed the more significant strikes. Sanchez continued to pressure Weichel and dropped him with a thunderous liver shot that had the German fighter grimacing in pain.

Bellator dual-champ Patricio Freire cruised to the featherweight grand prix semifinals. Freire (31-4 MMA, 19-4 BMMA) put his featherweight title on the line against Pedro Carvalho in the grand prix quarterfinal at Bellator 252, which took place at Mohegan Sun Arena in Uncasville, Conn. It didn’t take long for “Pitbull” to prove why he’s the champion, making quick work of Carvalho.

Bellator free fight: Yaroslav Amosov continues unbeaten streak at Bellator 252

Yaroslav Amosov ’s relentless rise toward the top of the Bellator welterweight division is showing no sign of abating. The undefeated Ukrainian faced the latest test of his credentials against fellow unbeaten contender Logan Storley at Bellator 252 and was pushed to the limit four-time NCAA Division I All-American in his toughest outing to date. Storley (11-1 MMA, 6-1 BMMA) looked to take charge of the action in Round 1 and pushed the pace in search of a takedown. But, despite being forced onto the back foot, Amosov (25-0 MMA, 6-0 BMMA) showcased excellent defensive skills as he nullified much of the American’s offense, while also landing occasional scoring strikes. Round 2 saw a similar pattern, with Storley continuing to push the action, but Amosov expertly fended off his man and scored with his strikes as he gained a foothold in the bout

Don’t even think about asking Bellator star A.J McKee if he’d fight Aaron Pico

If you think you can goad A.J. McKee into starting some kind of lowkey beef with former teammate Aaron Pico , think again. McKee (17-0 MMA, 17-0 BMMA) knows his next fight will be for the Bellator featherweight title after punching his ticket to the tournament final with a “Submission of the Year”-candidate finish of former bantamweight champion Darrion Caldwell in the Bellator 253 main event this past Thursday. McKee will fight either champ Patricio Freire or Emmanuel Sanchez , who meet in the other semifinal fight likely sometime in early 2021. But one fighter McKee has no realistic interest in fighting down the line, whether he becomes a Bellator champ or not, is Pico (7-3 MMA, 7-3 BMMA)

Bellator’s Aaron Pico still has eye on boxing – but when the time is right

One of the most highly touted prospects in MMA has aspirations of lacing up the boxing gloves. Aaron Pico (7-3 MMA, 7-3 BMMA), 24, already has experienced ups and downs in his young MMA career, but he’s back to living up to his potential after going 3-0 with three finishes in 2020 – including a recent knockout at Bellator 253 – to rebound from a 2019 in which he was knocked out twice. A standout wrestler, Pico also boxed at a young age, winning the national Junior Golden Gloves tournament in 2009. He’s been able to successfully translate his technique to MMA, with six of his seven professional wins coming by knockout.

UFC Fight Night 182 had a former lightweight champion atop the card. Freire starched Pedro Carvalho in the Bellator 252 main event – and had some room to move up at featherweight. In the UFC, Rafael dos Anjos returned to lightweight after a stint at welterweight and was dominant against Paul Felder
