function not found Former UFC middleweight champion Anderson Silva may have lost his belt, but he hasn’t lost his favored betting status, although it has taken a hit. Now that the rematch is set and Weidman vs. Silva II is signed for UFC 168 on Dec. 28 at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas, the odds are coming out for fight number two. Silva, despite the upset loss to Weidman at UFC 162, is still the favored fighter, with the odds opening at -140 for Silva compared to +100 for Weidman, according to the line set by MMAOddsbreaker.com’s Nick Kalikas . The -140 number means that Silva is favored and that you’d have to place a $140 bet on him to win $100, should he win the rematch. The +100 on Weidman means that you would have to wager just $100 on Weidman to win $100 if he again defeated Silva. That’s a bit of a drop from the first fight, where Silva opened at -215 (bet $215 to win $100), while Weidman opened at +165 (bet $100 to win $165)

Anderson Silva already 2-to-1 favorite over Chris Weidman in potential rematch

Former UFC middleweight champion Anderson Silva already is a 2-to-1 favorite over the man who just took his title, Chris Weidman , should a potential rematch happen. Veteran oddsmaker Joey Oddessa on Tuesday confirmed the opening lines with MMAjunkie.com (www.mmajunkie.com). Oddessa said the line opened at -175, but within the first few hours already had been bet up to -200 for Silva. Silva (33-5 MMA, 16-1 UFC) put his title on the line against Weidman (10-0 MMA, 6-0 UFC) at this past Saturday’s UFC 162. After a first round that saw Silva win on one judge’s scorecard, but Weidman on the other two, Silva started the second by continuing a pattern he has shown in the past – trying to bait his opponent in by ducking and dodging and asking Weidman to hit him. But right after getting hit and playing possum, Silva got hit with a Weidman left that put him on the canvas, and a few quick shots on the ground later his 16-fight UFC win streak and 10 middleweight title defenses had gone by the wayside. UFC President Dana White said following the event that he’ll be pushing for a rematch – even though Silva said Weidman is the new champion and he doesn’t want to fight for the title anymore.

What we don’t seem to appreciate, at least in White’s eyes, is what that one fight truly meant for the UFC, which came into the very first live finale for “The Ultimate Fighter” with an uncertain future, and left with a deal that would at least ensure that it could keep the lights on for a little while longer. You know this chapter of the origin story by now. The UFC, down to the last of the small fortune that the Fertitta family was willing to pump into it, bought its way onto Spike TV with an MMA reality show that White hoped would be the steppingstone to success. The words she chose didn’t make it all the way across the cage to press row, so I can’t tell you exactly what she said to her husband in that tender moment. Judging by body language alone, it didn’t seem like she was trying to tell him what a good job he was doing against Stipe Miocic in Saturday’s UFC 161 co-main event. Can you blame her? Nelson bet big on himself when he spurned the UFC’s offer of a contract extension and opted instead to fight the last fight of his current deal without a secure plan for his future in place. If he won, he could up his asking price and stick it to UFC President Dana White all at the same time – two of his favorite pastimes of late. It’s just that, by the time the second round had ended and a depleted Nelson had staggered back to his corner, it seemed increasingly unlikely that his gamble was going to pay off

But the bantamweight veteran believes he’s got the type of matchup that will help him turn things around, even if the crowd at MTS Centre in Winnipeg might not be on the same page.
