Dave Herman has tried to get under the skin of the world’s best Brazilian jiu-jitsu practitioners in the past. And to be quite frank, it didn’t work. For Herman’s fight against Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira this past October, he made it a point to tell the world jiu-jitsu wouldn’t work on him. Then he went out and got submitted by “Big Nog” at UFC 153. On Saturday, Herman (21-5 MMA, 1-3 UFC) fights Gabriel Gonzaga (14-7 MMA, 9-6 UFC) at UFC 162, which takes place at MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas. And while he hasn’t made the same drastic proclamations this time around, it doesn’t seem like it would matter. Not to Gonzaga, anyway

There has been a minor war of words brewing between UFC heavyweights Stefan Struve and Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira , leading many to believe that a fight was imminent. They won’t be fighting anytime soon, however, as Big Nog’s manager, Ed Soares, recently told MMAFighting.com that the former UFC and Pride champion wouldn’t return to training for at least three months following surgery. Nogueira had to undergo surgery after an MRI revealed extensive ligament damage in his left elbow stemming from an armbar submission loss to Fabricio Werdum at UFC on Fuel TV 10 on June 8 in Brazil. Nogueira also required surgery following a Kimura submission loss to Frank Mir in late 2011. That surgery required 16 screws in his humerus, but Nogueira still managed to return to the Octagon 10 months later to defeat Dave Herman.

Seems as though whatever brand of magic it is that flows through Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira ‘s veins when he fights in Brazil doesn’t work on fellow Brazilians. Or, since our sample size is still too small to draw any firm conclusions, maybe it just doesn’t work on Fabricio Werdum . If you’re one of those people who can barely be troubled to watch “The Ultimate Fighter” when it’s in English (*discreetly raises hand*), and so spent the better part of the past year wondering if Werdum had renounced professional violence and gone off to live in a monastery, consider Saturday night’s UFC on FUEL TV 10 main event your reminder. “Vai Cavalo” is still here, and he’s still pretty damned good. The question is, how good? Because I’m not sure his win over Nogueira gave us much of an answer. That’s not a knock on “Big Nog.” He might sometimes walk like the Tin Man when he’s outside the cage, but once his foot hits that mat he’s still a dangerous fighter with plenty of tricks up his sleeve

FORTALEZA, BRAZIL – Fabricio Werdum beat legendary jiu-jitsu ace Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira at his own game and ended a night of submissions in fitting fashion. The Brazilian heavyweights, who also recently served as head coaches on “The Ultimate Fighter: Brazil 2,” met in the FUEL TV-televised headliner of Saturday’s UFC on FUEL TV 10 event at Paulo Sarasate Arena in Fortaleza, Ceara, Brazil. Werdum (17-5-1 MMA, 5-2 UFC) largely controlled the action and overcame some first-round fatigue before getting the fight to the ground, where he eventually caught Nogueira (34-8-1 MMA, 5-4 UFC) in the second round with an armbar. It avenged a 2006 defeat to “Big Nog” that came in the PRIDE organization. Check out the highlights above. For the better part of the last decade, no two names in MMA have come to define heavyweight ground wizardry more than Brazilian’s Fabricio Werdum and Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira . The two first met in the Pride 2006 Open Weight Grand Prix Quarterfinals in Saitama, Japan. That night, “Big Nog” earned a unanimous decision victory over the still-green Werdum. On Saturday night in Fortaleza, Brazil, the capacity crowd at Ginásio Paulo Sarasate were witness to one of the most anticipated rematches in heavyweight history, as Nogueira vs. Werdum 2 headlined the night’s UFC on Fuel TV 10 fight card. Round one opened with “Vai Cavalo” throwing pace-setting leg kicks to Nogueira’s lead leg. Almost immediately, Werdum looked to clinch with the pressuring Nogueira. Securing a takedown seconds into the opening frame, the two were immediately off to a ground battle. As Werdum had full mount, Nogueira scrambled, eventually regaining half guard. Werdum worked various ground and pound, but Nogueira secured a leg and a mad dash to the feet ensued. Back on the feet, Nogueira pressured Werdum with an assortment of popping jabs and vicious dirty boxing from the clinch against the cage. Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira hit it right on the head while talking with reporters in Brazil on Thursday. “I’m not quitting yet,” the former PRIDE and UFC heavyweight champion told MMAjunkie.com (mmajunkie.com). “You guys always want to put me out of the game, but I’m hungry.” He’s right about that, by the way. At least the part about us always trying to put him out of the game. At least as long as you understand “you guys” to refer to the media crowding around him, asking questions that basically boil down to, So you had enough yet? This is something we do with fighters of a certain age. Mid-30s is usually when it starts, though it can skew younger or older depending on when you started, how many fights you’ve had and how many times you’ve woken up with a great view of the ceiling at the MGM Grand. Nogueira is 37 years old.
