Bellator MMA has another big rematch set for its first pay-per-view card. Muhammed Lawal (11-2 MMA, 3-1 BMMA) and Emanuel Newton (21-7-1 MMA, 4-1 BMMA) will meet for the promotion’s interim light heavyweight title at Bellator 106 in November. Promotion officials on Thursday announced the new fight booking.

The last fight on Ben Askren ‘s Bellator MMA deal is in the books, and the promotion’s welterweight champion delivered yet again with perhaps his most dominant performance to date. Now CEO Bjorn Rebney finds himself in a position he’s been in before – hoping to keep one of his champions rather than lose him to the competition. Rebney on Wednesday confirmed to MMAjunkie.com Radio (www.mmajunkie.com/radio) that Askren’s win over Andrey Koreshkov at this past week’s Bellator 97 card was the last fight on his current deal. Rebney also said he’s unsure of what steps the promotion will take in negotiations with Askren (12-0 MMA, 9-0 BMMA), who has a standard exclusive negotiating period with Bellator built into his deal before he can seek offers from other promotions. In the past, as was the case with former lightweight champ Eddie Alvarez , Rebney waived the exclusive period and let Alvarez test the market early. He got an offer from the UFC, Bellator attempted to match it and now the entire case is tied up in the legal system with Alvarez’s side saying Bellator’s counter-offer was not a true match

Bellator signs Wolfslair fighters Peter Graham, Gavin Sterritt, Linton Vassell

With Wolfslair MMA, the former main training ground of Quinton Jackson , getting some attention with “Rampage” signing with Bellator MMA, the England-based gym now will send a trio of fighters to the promotion. Bellator has signed Peter Graham (9-5 MMA, 0-0 BMMA), Gavin Sterritt (4-1 MMA, 0-0 BMMA) and Linton Vassell (11-3 MMA, 0-0 BMMA) to deals, promotion officials recently announced. All three will fight during the upcoming ninth season, which will feature 11 events on Spike TV and one on pay-per-view – with Wolfslair alum “Rampage” headlining against fellow former UFC champion Tito Ortiz . Bellator’s ninth season begins with a Saturday event on Sept. 7, then returns to a regular Friday night lineup the following week for all events but the Nov.

With Bellator MMA’s first pay-per-view venture featuring a pair of headliners who never have fought for the promotion before, its champions apparently don’t need to worry about being left out in the cold. Bellator CEO Bjorn Rebney on Monday said the plan is for the promotion to stack much the rest of the main card of its first pay-per-view with title fights. Bellator 106 is set for Nov. 2 at Long Beach Arena in Long Beach, Calif., and will be headlined by former UFC light heavyweight champions Quinton Jackson (32-11 MMA, 0-0 BMMA) and Tito Ortiz (16-11-1 MMA, 0-0 BMMA). Ortiz’s signing with the promotion just was announced this past week when he was introduced in the cage by “Rampage,” who was on hand at Bellator 97 to make the special announcement about the fight. Jackson fought most recently in the UFC and dropped a decision to Glover Teixeira , his third straight loss. Ortiz retired following his loss to Forrest Griffin at UFC 148 in July 2012, also his third straight setback and seventh loss in nine fights. Rebney, as part of a media call in support of the company’s inaugural pay-per-view, said he isn’t worried about “Rampage” and Ortiz stealing the spotlight from longstanding Bellator champions like Pat Curran , Michael Chandler and Ben Askren , the latter two of which just defended their titles in dominant fashion at Bellator 97

That’s when the Bellator MMA CEO will cross two things off his bucket list: Seeing a fight between former champions Quinton Jackson (32-11 MMA, 0-0 BMMA) and Tito Ortiz (16-11-1 MMA, 0-0 BMMA), and putting on his company’s first pay-per-view event. Rebney long has talked about his desire to delve into the pay-per-view landscape with Bellator.

Bellator MMA light heavyweight and ex-UFC champ Quinton Jackson said he wanted to fight former boxing champ Roy Jones Jr. at the promotion’s pay-per-view event slated for winter. But UFC Hall of Famer Tito Ortiz put the kibosh on that. Or in the words of “Rampage,” “f—ed it all up.” This past week, Bellator threw MMA fans a curveball when it announced Ortiz as Jackson’s opponent rather than Jones, who had been targeted for a boxing match with “Rampage.” Jackson (32-11 MMA, 0-0 BMMA) and Ortiz (16-11-1 MMA, 0-0 BMMA), who’ve been friends for over a decade, will headline the Viacom-owned promotion’s first foray into pay-per-view on Nov. 2 at Long Beach Arena in Long Beach, Calif. Jackson said he was putting together a training camp for Jones and planned to cut to 200 pounds, which is the limit for boxing cruiserweights, when he got word that Bellator was going to sign Ortiz. When I first heard that Bellator MMA was thinking about promoting some crazy, borderline unsanctionable boxing match between former UFC champion Quinton Jackson and boxing legend Roy Jones Jr., I didn’t get it. Except for those people who are dying to find out just how much leather “Rampage” can eat in one sitting, I wondered, who wants to see that? Better yet, who at Bellator could possibly think that sounds like a good idea? Then I watched Wednesday night’s Bellator 97 broadcast on Spike TV, where Jackson (32-11 MMA, 0-0 BMMA) announced that, instead of RJJ, he’d be facing Tito Ortiz (16-11-1 MMA, 0-0 BMMA) in Bellator’s first ever pay-per-view event. Suddenly it all made sense. The Jackson-Jones talk? That was just a feint designed to bring our guard down.

Wednesday’s Bellator 97 event included five main-card bouts and five knockouts, including TKO wins by welterweight champion Ben Askren and notable Muhammed Lawal . In addition to lightweight champ Michael Chandler (12-0 MMA, 9-0 BMMA) topping David Rickels (14-2 MMA, 8-2 BMMA) in just 44 seconds, fellow champ Askren (12-0 MMA, 9-0 BMMA) posted a hugely lopsided TKO win over fellow welterweight Andrey Koreshkov (13-1 MMA, 5-1 BMMA) in the co-headliner. Two “Summer Series” tournaments also concluded as “King Mo” Lawal (11-2 MMA, 3-1 BMMA) battered and bloodied fellow light heavyweight Jacob Noe (12-3 MMA, 3-2 BMMA), and heavyweight Vitaly Minakov (12-0 MMA, 3-0 BMMA) overcame a baffling point deduction to stop Ryan Martinez (10-2 MMA, 3-2 BMMA) late in their fight.
