At PRIDE Shockwave 2002, the two powerhouses collided at Tokyo National Stadium, and the ensuing clash remains one of the most memorable in the history of the legendary promotion. From the opening moments – when Nogueira shot forward, only to be power-bombed to the canvas – to the dramatic ending, with “Big Nog” locking in a fight-ending armbar that brought a capacity crowd to a fever pitch, the contest showed the essence of PRIDE. Shalan, making his professional MMA debut, came flying out of his corner and unloaded a vicious barrage of shots that forced Sapp into the corner as the American cowered away from the punches in a manner familiar to longtime MMA fans through his career. After three rounds, it’s safe to say it delivered. Venturing out of his comfort zone to meet Nasukawa (4-0) under kickboxing rules, Horiguchi (25-2) put forth a valiant effort, resisting Nasukawa’s fast, creative offense and landing some powerful shots of his own. Ultimately, though, it was Nasukawa’s late-round rallies – including a key cartwheel kick in the third – that made a difference
