Ex-WWE star Bobby Lashley seeks multi-fight deal, wants four more fights in 2013

After fighting just once in all of 2012, heavyweight Bobby Lashley (9-2) racked up two wins in the past month alone. If things go according to his plans, Lashley could have as many as six fights under his belt by year’s end. “There’s a couple organizations right now that we’re talking about doing a multi-fight deal with, so it’s just time to feel some things out,” Lashley told MMAjunkie.com Radio (www.mmajunkie.com/radio). “It’s time to figure out who would like to have me for the next few fights.” Lashley, who recently took some time off from MMA to work a few things out in his personal life, has returned to the sport with a vengeance, earning two wins in a span of just 22 days, both coming by way of submission. Both victories came against fighters coming off losses, but Lashley believes they were the right opponents for him to continue his development as a fighter. Still, he knows at 36 years old, it’s time to put his talent to the test if he has aspirations of landing on the sport’s biggest stages. “I think I’ve got to prove myself a little more,” Lashley said. “I think the next few fights, … I’m going to be able to show how eager I really am and what I’m capable of doing. The U.K. invaded the U.S. at Global Warrior Challenge’s “British Invasion” on Saturday night at the Sprint Center in Kansas City, Mo. It was an entertaining night of fights that saw everything from slick submissions, to comeback wins, to vicious knockouts, to hard-fought decisions. In the end, it was a successful night for the U.K. competitors, as they took the majority of the bouts in the country vs. country format.

It didn’t take long for Bobby Lashley to show exactly what he wanted to do on Saturday night. Lashley shot for a takedown 12 seconds into his main event fight against Matthew Larson at “Global Warrior Challenge: British Invasion.” He worked at it and finally secured it 35 seconds in. But though Larson popped back up quickly, he soon was back down, and with authority. Lashley slammed Larson to the canvas, then went to work with ground-and-pound, fended off a Larson kimura attempt, took his opponent’s back and secured a fairly easy rear-naked choke to end the fight in 98 seconds.

Before “King” Mo Lawal and Quinton “Rampage” Jackson landed their historic deals that saw them sign with both Bellator to compete in MMA as well as TNA Wrestling to begin their pro wrestling careers, Bobby Lashley was an old hand at the trade. A former collegiate standout in wrestling, Lashley was a quick pickup several years ago for World Wrestling Entertainment (WWE) where he cut his teeth in the industry and became one of the company’s biggest stars during his years with the organization. Following an injury that saw him exit the WWE in 2008, Lashley began pursuing his new career in mixed martial arts, where he competed in several promotions including a few fights in Strikeforce. During that time, Lashley found his way back into pro wrestling as well, working local shows as well as becoming a mainstay at TNA wrestling. Lashley has known since day one that he decided to dedicate his life to both MMA and pro wrestling that it was going to be hard on his body and mind, but his passion never faded and he continues to walk both roads today. It’s not an easy path to travel, however, and Lashley is quick to offer advice to both Lawal and Jackson that being the best in MMA and pro wrestling won’t come easy.

That’s because, especially for a guy who started off with all the buzz that comes from the pro wrestling-to-MMA transition, the heat of the spotlight has cooled considerably for Lashley in MMA. The man who once looked like he might become the next Brock Lesnar is now fighting on small shows like Saturday night’s Global Warrior Challenge event in Kansas City, Mo., where he’s not even the pay-per-view event’s headliner. What’s more, he’s small-timing it on purpose. In his first fight in more than a year, former Strikeforce heavyweight Bobby Lashley picked up a second-round submission victory in the headliner of Friday’s Titan FC 25 event. With the fight on the mat, Lashley (8-2) tapped out veteran Kevin Asplund (15-5) with a keylock, who’s now dropped four straight since an eight-year, 15-fight win streak. The bout aired on AXS TV from Marshall Army Airfield in Fort Riley, Kan. Lashley, a former WWE champion who hadn’t fought MMA since a decision loss to James Thompson at Super Fight League 3 in May 2012, cruised in the fight.
