MMA legend Wanderlei Silva returned to the ring last weekend in an exhibition bout in Sao Paulo, Brazil against former Brazilian boxing champion Rafael Freitas. The bout didn’t look like an exhibition bout, though. Silva, known for his aggressive style, took the fight to Freitas.

UFC newcomer Jessica Andrade ‘s bright smile hides a fierce martial arts competitor. The only grin bigger than hers during an open workout in support of UFC on FOX 8 belonged to her opponent, recent bantamweight title challenger Liz Carmouche . But Andrade’s nickname is also “Bate Estaca,” which in Portuguese means “Pile Driver.” It’s an illegal move in MMA, and one that immediately prompts howls for point deductions. Andrade, a blue belt in jiu-jitsu who lives in the city of Niteroi in the state of Rio de Janeiro, earned it during a grappling competition in which she faced a larger opponent. During their match, she was caught in an armbar, and in a panic, picked up the opponent and slammed her on her head. She doesn’t believe in cheating, of course, but she’s kept the name throughout her 11-fight career because it just might serve a purpose in the UFC. “I think it’s a cool nickname if it puts fear in the hearts of my opponents,” Andrade told MMAjunkie.com (www.mmajunkie.com). Andrade (9-2 MMA, 0-0 UFC) and Carmouche (8-3 MMA, 0-1 UFC) open the main card of UFC on FOX 8, which takes place Saturday at Seattle’s KeyArena and airs live on FOX. Andrade steps up on short notice as a replacement for ex-Strikeforce champ Miesha Tate , who was tapped to coach “The Ultimate Fighter 18″ and fight champ Ronda Rousey when title challenger Cat Zingano was injured. The 5-foot-3 Andrade walked away from five scheduled fights in six months to accept the bout with Carmouche, who returns to the octagon after a submission loss to Rousey in February. Following a year and a half layoff from MMA, boxing champion Holly “Preacher’s Daughter” Holm returned to the sport this past February with a second-round TKO stoppage of Katie Merrill at Bellator 91. The win not only signified Holm’s return to MMA , but also helped her realize that her future lay in this sport rather than in the one she had accomplished so much in. “I had two (MMA) fights in 2011 and had been wanting to get back since then,” said Holm. “It was just a great opportunity and actually after that (Bellator) fight and the next boxing match (against Mary McGee in May) I told my coach I was done with boxing. “I’m just really excited about MMA and I feel like I’ve improved a lot and I’m excited about the fight coming up. UFC middleweight champion Anderson Silva has publically stated over the last couple of years that he’d like to fight boxing legend Roy Jones Jr. in a boxing match at some point. On June 7, Jones Jr. told TMZ.com that he would “love to do it.” During a UFC 162: Silva vs. Weidman media conference call on Tuesday, Silva reiterated his desire to fight the 44-year-old former boxing champion. “Of course I want to fight him. Maybe after this fight with Weidman, regardless of the outcome, I would love to fight him. He’s already said that he would fight me also, so that’s something that I would really like to happen,” said the UFC champion. “I feel that his boxing style is one that I’d like to test myself against. I’ve always been a fan of his, and I just always wanted to test myself against Roy Jones.” Silva recently signed a 10-fight deal with the UFC, but at 38-years-old it’s uncertain if he’ll be able to fulfill the contract. “There’s a lot of possibilities of different things that could happen. But that’s a fight that I’ve always wanted. That’s a fight that I still want. We’re going to have to see how everything plays out and wait for the next chapter of Anderson Silva and the UFC,” said Silva. “Everything is a possibility, but really it’s going to come down to my willpower and my desire to still be fighting. I have a lot of other things that I want to do. I have other desires, and one of those is fighting Roy Jones. But we’re just going to have to see how things work out in the next few fights and how I feel,” he added.
