After eight stoppages in eight fights at ONE Championship 42, the fans in Singapore had to endure a title fight that went the distance. And despite those eight prior finishes, the back-and-forth action in the main event between Angela Lee and Mei Yamaguchi may have trumped them all put together. After 25 minutes, Lee (6-0) took a unanimous decision from Yamaguchi (15-9-1) to win the inaugural ONE Championship women’s atomweight title. Lee, who has been built up as the women’s face of the promotion, was more than a 5-1 favorite against Yamaguchi. But the Japanese fighter gave Lee all she could handle and then some, putting Lee in trouble several times in the fight, only to fall short

Angela Lee An injury to middleweight champion Vitaly Bigdash has caused a shuffle at the top of next month’s ONE Championship 42 card in Singapore, but the event still will have a pair of title fights. Bigdash (8-0) has suffered an injury, the promotion today announced, and is out of the main event against challenger Aleksei Butorin (10-0). The original co-headliner between Angela Lee (5-0) and Mei Yamaguchi (15-8-1) now will serve as the main event to crown the inaugural ONE Championship women’s atomweight titleholder. The new co-main event between Roger Gracie (7-2) and Michal Pasternak (11-0) now will be for the promotion’s inaugural light heavyweight title

Despite a brief scare in the opening seconds of the fight, Ben Askren (13-0) kept his undefeated record intact with a first-round submission of Bakhtiyar Abbasov (11-3) in today’s ONE FC 16 headliner at Singapore Indoor Arena. In the bout, which streamed in North America as an online pay-per-view, Abbasov surprised Askren when he shot for a takedown in the first 10 seconds of the contest. While that’s an impressive feat in itself, the move ultimately led to his demise. Askren, an Olympian and former Bellator MMA welterweight champion, quickly reversed position and began to tee off with a ground-and-pound attack. While Abbasov absorbed a commendable amount of damage, he eventually succumbed to the pressure and submitted to the arm-triangle choke at the 4:21 mark of Round 1. Askren was expected to challenge for the ONE FC welterweight title in his promotional debut, but the fight failed to come to fruition

With Askren-Abbasov in headliner, ‘ONE FC 16: Honor & Glory’ adds five more bouts

Five more bouts are now official for next month’s “ONE FC 16: Honor & Glory” event, which features a previously announced welterweight headliner between former Bellator MMA champion Ben Askren (12-0) and Bakhtiyar Abbasov (11-2). ONE FC 16 takes place May 30 at Singapore Indoor Stadium in Kallang, Singapore. The event streams as an online pay-per-view in North America. One of the key bouts includes bantamweight Xian Ji (11-2), a Chinese prospect and former titleholder for the Legend FC promotion, vs. Thanh Vu (3-3), a Vietnamese-Australian grappler who fights for the fourth time under the ONE FC banner.
