LFA looking California, feeling Minnesota for early summer events

LFA has started to set its schedule for the summer months with a pair of events in Minnesota and California in the weekends following Memorial Day. LFA 68 is set for May 31 at Mystic Lake Casino Hotel in Prior Lake, Minn., the promotion recently announced. And the following week, LFA 69 goes down at Morongo Outdoor Pavilion in Cabazon, Calif. Both events have main cards on AXS TV. In the LFA 68 headliner, two-time NCAA D-II national wrestling champion Raufeon Stots (11-1) takes on Brazilian prospect Gustavo Erak (21-4-1) in a bantamweight bout. In addition, Nate Jennerman (13-4) meets Luis Saldana (13-6) at featherweight in the co-feature and Brandon Jenkins (12-6) fights Le’Ville Simpson (8-4) at lightweight.

Earlier in the day, Floyd Mayweather called his exhibition boxing bout with Tenshin Nasukawa a “ 9 minute walk thru .” As it turned out, he needed less than three. The 41-year-old Mayweather knocked down the 20-year-old Nasukawa three times in the opening round of their contest, which capped off today’s Rizin FF 14 at Saitama Super Arena in Saitama, Japan. Mayweather showed little respect for his opponent at the start, miming real punches while waiting to see what Nasukawa could offer. With a smile on his face, Mayweather came forward and landed a pair of body shots that sent Nasukawa to the canvas for an early takedown. Nasukawa crawled back to his feet, struggling to mask the pain he obviously felt.

Schulte showed off his judo skills before choking Jason High unconscious with a rear-naked choke at the 1:34 mark of the opening frame. The lightweight fight headlined PFL 5 on Thursday at NYCB LIVE in Uniondale, N.Y. The event’s main card aired live on NBCSN following early prelims on Facebook Live. This card originally was set to feature a main-event matchup between Brian Foster and Natan Schulte , but that bout was scratched when an illness forced Foster to withdraw. Instead, Jason High faces Schulte in the headlining contest. High is in a desperate situation at PFL 5, having lost his first regular-season lightweight fight via controversial stoppage. Schulte enters PFL 5 with three regular-season points thanks to the unanimous-decision win he picked up at PFL 2. Lightweights aren’t the only fighters competing in their second, and final, regular season bout at PFL 5.

CHICAGO – When Smealinho Rama wasn’t allowed to answer the bell for the third round, Brandon Halsey thought he was about to celebrate a five-point win at PFL 2. Instead, when the official result was announced, Halsey’s TKO victory was ruled as ending one second into the third round instead of at the 5:00 mark of the second.

CHICAGO – After a night of slick submissions, some brutal knockouts and a bizarre/heated/controversial finish, today’s PFL 2 event concluded with a bit of a grind-fest. In the end, after three hard-fought rounds, Will Brooks (19-4) emerged victorious via unanimous decision over fellow UFC vet Luis Firmino (20-9). The fight concluded the NBCSN-televised event at Chicago Theatre, which followed early fights on Facebook. As PFL’s “regular season” rolls on and fighters try to tally points for high seeds in the “playoffs”/tournaments, Brooks had to settle for three points – he didn’t get any bonus ones for a stoppage – for his victory, which came via 30-27 scores across the board.
