Phil Davis knows Saturday’s UFC 163 win over fellow light-heavyweight contender Lyoto Machida was a controversial one – even if the bout hadn’t taken place in his opponent’s home country, where Brazilians occasionally are gifted decisions. So when it comes to the type of close unanimous-decision victory he picked up at Rio de Janeiro’s HSBC Arena, Davis said he understands that it may be unpopular with many fans. “Fighting is an emotional thing,” he said after the pay-per-view co-headliner. “If I had lost this fight, I would be like, ‘I didn’t lose that fight, and they know it.’ That’s how it is. You put all you have into it. So everyone who was a Lyoto fan, I understand where you’re coming from

At this point in his career, Anthony Perosh is a man who seems to know pretty much what he wants. That includes who and where he’d like to fight – and that he’ll hang up his gloves when he’s good and ready, and that time sure isn’t coming soon. Perosh (13-7 MMA, 3-4 UFC) on Saturday meets Vinny Magalhaes (10-6 MMA, 1-3 UFC) on the main card of UFC 163, which takes place at HSBC Arena in Rio de Janeiro in Magalhaes’ home country of Brazil. They’ll fight prior to the pay-per-view portion of the show after on FX. Although non-Brazilian UFC fighters have what amounts to a horrible record when fighting Brazilians in Brazil, it was Perosh who wanted to sign on the dotted line to go into enemy territory. “I’ve been to Brazil many times to compete in (Brazilian jiu-jitsu), but never in MMA,” Perosh told MMAjunkie.com Radio (www.mmajunkie.com/radio)

Seems as though whatever brand of magic it is that flows through Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira ‘s veins when he fights in Brazil doesn’t work on fellow Brazilians. Or, since our sample size is still too small to draw any firm conclusions, maybe it just doesn’t work on Fabricio Werdum . If you’re one of those people who can barely be troubled to watch “The Ultimate Fighter” when it’s in English (*discreetly raises hand*), and so spent the better part of the past year wondering if Werdum had renounced professional violence and gone off to live in a monastery, consider Saturday night’s UFC on FUEL TV 10 main event your reminder. “Vai Cavalo” is still here, and he’s still pretty damned good. The question is, how good? Because I’m not sure his win over Nogueira gave us much of an answer. That’s not a knock on “Big Nog.” He might sometimes walk like the Tin Man when he’s outside the cage, but once his foot hits that mat he’s still a dangerous fighter with plenty of tricks up his sleeve
