After withdrawing from tomorrow’s WSOF eight-man, single-night lightweight tournament, Brian Cobb (20-8) has been released from his contract with the Las Vegas-based promotion. MMAjunkie today confirmed the move with WSOF exec Ali Abdelaziz. “I wish him the best of luck in the future, but at this point, I just don’t think it makes sense for Brian to be a part of this promotion,” Abdelaziz told MMAjunkie

Benny Madrid Next month’s one-night, eight-man lightweight tournament at WSOF 25, which will decide the next title challenger for champ Justin Gaethje’s title, has some insurance policies in place in the form of two reserve fights. In the quarterfinal round, if a winner is unable to advance to the semifinals due to injury, his opponent – who would have just lost the fight – will move on his place, WSOF officials announced today. However, if neither the winner nor loser can move on to the semis, a semifinalist will come in the form of the winner of one of the reserver bouts. Those reserve matchups will be between LaRue Burley (6-1) and Joe Condon (12-8), and Benny Madrid (8-3) vs. Ramil Mustapayev (3-1). WSOF 25 takes place Nov.

WSOF championship belt The WSOF is going old school to elect the next contender to lightweight champ Justin Gaethje’s title. The promotion today announced that WSOF 25, which takes place Nov. 20 at Comerica Theatre in Phoenix, will feature a single elimination eight-man tournament to crown its No. 1 contender at 155 pounds. Among those slated to participate in the tournament: two-time title challenger Luis Palomino (23-11), Brian Foster (22-7), Mike Ricci (10-4), Islam Mamedov (12-1), Brian Cobb (20-8), Jorge Patino 37-15-2), Joao Zeferino (18-6) and onetime title challenger Rich Patishnock (6-2). Quarterfinal matchups will be announced shortly, as will tournament rules.

T.J. O’Brien replaces Brian Cobb vs. Luis Palomino at WSOF 11

The main card is set, and the prelims have taken shape for WSOF 11, which is set for Ocean Center in Daytona, Fla., on July 5. A promotion official confirmed the location to MMAjunkie, as well as the card’s final main-card bout and four fights for the prelims. On the four-fight main card, Pablo Alfonso (9-5) meets Cody Bollinger (15-2) in a featherweight bout.

Brian Cobb Sees WSOF 3 as Opportunity to Put His Name in Eventual Title Talk

Following a start to his career where he fought as much as twice in one night, having an extended layoff has now become the norm for former PFC lightweight champion Brian “Bandit” Cobb . While Cobb’s layoffs haven’t been by design, he’s been using the time off to his benefit. “If anything, with technology the way it is nowadays, people can watch all my fights online. So with the longer layoff between fights, I can do things to change up from what I did in my previous fights,” said Cobb. “I can really pose different problems for the next fight than what they saw in my previous fight.

TUF 13 Alum Keon Caldwell Signs with World Series of Fighting

Former Ultimate Fighter 13 cast member Keon “Black Assassin” Caldwell has signed a multi-fight deal with the World Series of Fighting . Caldwell’s manager, Jason Ellis, informed MMAWeekly.com of the signing on Tuesday. Caldwell, who left TUF 13 during the season’s second episode due to family reasons and was replaced by Justin Edwards, will be looking to make his WSOF debut in late summer or early autumn according to Ellis. When Caldwell does make his debut for the promotion, he will do so at lightweight, which is quickly becoming one of the most stacked divisions in the WSOF. The promotion’s 155-pound roster includes fighters such as Justin Gatheje, Brian Cobb, Lyle Beerbohm and Jacob Volkman, all of whom will be competing on the company’s third installment on July 14 in Las Vegas
