Alex Nicholson and Josh Copeland looked like they wanted to stand and bang from the start in the PFL 8 heavyweight playoff semifinal headliner. And that’s what they did. But just when it looked like Nicholson was about to walk right over Copeland, with Copeland starting to bleed from a big cut above his right eye, Nicholson walked right into a massive overhand right hand from Copeland and was out in an instant.

On Friday, the inaugural season of the Professional Fighters League sees an historic moment with the start of its playoffs. The PFL debuted earlier this year with a regular season that had fighters competing twice – and earning points to try to qualify for the postseason. Fighters in each of six weight classes then could make their way into eight-man fields, and the winner of each division will get $1 million guaranteed. At PFL 8, the opening round of the playoffs gets underway in the heavyweight and featherweight divisions.

After 10 minutes of a bloody slugfest between Smealinho Rama and Jamie Abdallah , their fight essentially was moot – or so we thought for about a minute. Then the controversy started. Both Rama and Abdallah needed a finish in the first or second round in order to make the light heavyweight playoffs. A finish in the third round for either of them wouldn’t be enough. But after the second round, a cageside doctor shut the fight down after checking the damage to Abdallah’s (7-4) face and left orbital. That gave Rama (11-4) the win by TKO – at the 5:00 mark of the second round, which put him into the playoffs.

Harrison (18-0) dominated Jumabieke Tuerxun (20-7-1) in their featherweight fight – though Harrison’s failure to get a finish meant he picked up just three points for his season-opening fight instead of the maximum six. Still, Harrison dominated with a sweep on the scorecards, including a 30-26 tally

The lineup is set for the first event under PFL – the rebranded WSOF promotion that has relaunched with an ambitious yearlong tournament format with some major paydays. PFL 1 takes place Thursday, June 7, at Hulu Theater at Madison Square Garden in New York City. The main card airs on NBCSN following prelims on Facebook, though the 12-bout lineup hasn’t yet been assigned broadcast slots. As MMAjunkie recently reported, the organization put together a 72-man roster with fighters in six different weight classes. They’ll initially fight and earn points based on their methods of victory, and the top eight qualifiers will be seeded in tournaments later this year that earn each winner a cool $1 million. Blagoy Ivanov got his 10,000 steps. He also got a unanimous decision over Caio Alencar . When Ivanov could catch Alencar, he repeatedly landed thudding left hands against the Brazilian. Most of the time, he worked on his cardio as Alencar played the circle-and-counter game. On several occasions, Alencar was able to sneak in a straight right, and he repeatedly punished Ivanov’s body, an inconvenience for a 15-minute sprint
