UFC Champ Jon Jones Returns from Injury, Begins Training for Alexander Gustafsson

UFC light heavyweight champion Jon Jones has been sidelined ever since his UFC 159 victory over Chael Sonnen . That is, he had been sidelined until Tuesday. The champ injured his toe in the first-round drubbing of Sonnen on April 27 in New Jersey. Limping over to do his post-fight interview with UFC broadcaster Joe Rogan, Jones’ toe was jutting out at an unnatural angle, bleeding, the bone trying to sneak a peak through his skin. It caused more than a few stomachs to churn when the cameras focused on his injured foot. The injury, which most believed was a fracture, was actually a severe dislocation. That ended up being a more questionable proposition for healing than the fracture would have been, but Jones recuperated rather quickly, and has already returned to training.

Things certainly didn’t didn’t work out the way Anderson Silva hoped at UFC 162, but the resulting scenes paint “The Spider” in perhaps a more human light than ever before. In a video blog today released by Silva’s team, the former UFC middleweight champion allows cameras to capture the moments that followed his second-round knockout loss to Chris Weidman . The scenes includes a few post-fight pep talks from Usher and Roy Jones Jr., as well as an emotional group reflection on the loss. For a notoriously private fighter still regarded by many as perhaps the greatest fighter in history, it’s a revealing look at Silva’s immediate reaction to the loss and where his head may actually be ahead of a rumored rematch between the two. USA TODAY: Spike TV’s ‘Fight Master’ focuses on MMA reality

When he first heard Spike TV’s pitch for a reality show concept involving the Bellator MMA fight promotion, Frank Shamrock didn’t believe it. “They told me they were going to give me my own dojo and my own guys and let me train them entirely in my own method,” Shamrock, a former UFC and Strikeforce champion who serves as one of four coaches on the show, told USA TODAY Sports and MMAjunkie.com (www.mmajunkie.com). “I thought, ‘No, you’re not going to do that, not really.’ But they really did.” The premise for Fight Master, Spike TV’s new MMA-themed reality TV show that premieres tonight (10 p.m. ET/PT), is fairly simple. It’s also not so different from how the MMA world works when cameras aren’t rolling. The show takes a field of 16 fighters, whittled down from an original cast of 32 aspiring cast members, and allows them to choose one of four coaches who they will believe will help them win the ensuing single-elimination tournament.
