Heavyweights Andrei Arlovski and Mike Kyle entertained the crowd at New Jersey’s Revel Atlantic City on Saturday with a back-and-forth battle in the main event of World Series of Fighting 5. Kyle landed early, knocking Arlovski to the canvas. Arlovski weathered the storm and worked his way back to his feet where his right hand began to find a home. He scored a knockdown late in the round and landed a hard shot as Kyle tried to stand.

RIO DE JANEIRO – Talk about a measure of revenge for Anthony Perosh. A little more than a year after Perosh was knocked out in seven seconds by Ryan Jimmo, he went into hostile territory in Brazil and knocked out Vinny Magalhaes in just 14 seconds. The light heavyweight bout took place today at UFC 163 at Rio de Janeiro’s HSBC Arena. It aired on FX ahead of the pay-per-view main card. Perosh landed a right hand in the first exchange that wobbled Magalhaes, and with Perosh already on the inside, he pushed the Brazilian to the canvas

UFC 163 results and photos: Sergio Moraes submits Neil Magny in first round

RIO DE JANEIRO – In a battle of “Ultimate Fighter” veterans, Sergio Moraes put his Brazilian jiu-jitsu on display to stop Neil Magny. Magny brought a big reach advantage into the fight, but once Moraes worked his way past that, he cruised when the fight hit the canvas. The home-country fan favorite sank in a triangle choke, then transitioned to a mounted triangle to force Magny to tap at the 3:13 mark of the first round. The welterweight bout took place today at UFC 163 at Rio de Janeiro’s HSBC Arena. It aired on FX ahead of the pay-per-view main card. Magny tried to use his nine-inch reach advantage early to keep Moraes at distance. But eventually, Moraes was able to get inside with him, clinch up and land a trip takedown. And that was the beginning of the end for Magny, a Season 16 semifinalist on “The Ultimate Fighter.” From there, Moraes, the runner-up on the first season of “The Ultimate Fighter: Brazil,” transitioned to side control and tried to go to work with Magny by controlling his head

ABC to recommend new MMA language for downed fighters

The concept of what constitutes a downed fighter could change following this week’s meeting of the Association of Boxing Commissions, which oversees MMA’s regulatory bodies. Commission representatives Nick Lembo (New Jersey), Bernie Profato (Ohio) and Keith Kizer (Nevada), who represent some of MMA’s busiest and most prominent regulatory bodies, will present their plan at Wednesday’s ABC meeting in San Antonio. Lembo will argue their case, in which the regulators want referees to instruct fighters that placing a finger tip on the canvas won’t necessarily make them a downed fighter. In recent years, many standing fighters have taken advantage of the current language used in the Unified Rules of MMA. That helps them avoid knees or kicks to the head, or possibly put their opponent in danger of a warning or point deduction.

UFC on Fox 8 Results: Liz Carmouche Dominates, Making Her Case for Another Shot at Ronda Rousey

When Liz Carmouche stepped into the UFC women’s bantamweight championship bout opposite titleholder Ronda Rousey at UFC 157, many people believed she hadn’t yet earned her position as title challenger. She nearly caught Rousey in a submission that night. If that weren’t enough to make believers out of her doubters, Carmouche’s follow-up performance at UFC on Fox 8 on Saturday night should make converts of the remaining skeptics. Carmouche stepped in the Octagon with 21-year-old Brazilian fighter Jessica Andrade in Seattle, immediately taking control. She put Andrade up against the cage early, but quickly took her to the mat, employing her harsh ground and pound attack. Carmouche looked like she might just run away with the fight, but Andrade someone regained her feet late in the round and slammed Carmouche to the canvas. UFC on FOX 8 results/photos: Danny Castillo gets past range of Tim Means

SEATTLE – Danny Castillo seemed to have a hard time solving the distance puzzle that Tim Means brought him, but he did enough to leave with his hand raised. Castillo landed takedowns in each round to control the fight’s tempo when he wasn’t able to get past the reach advantage Means presented, and he took home a unanimous decision with a trio of 29-28 scores. The 160-pound catchweight bout (Means did not make weight) was part of today’s UFC on FOX 8 event at KeyArena in Seattle. It aired on FX following additional prelims on Facebook and ahead of a main card on FOX. Castillo missed with a high kick early, but when Means tried to take advantage of Castillo slipping to the canvas, Castillo got a takedown and went to work on top. Castillo worked for ground-and-pound, and when Means got back to his feet with 90 seconds left in the round, Castillo quickly took him back down. But Means was back to his feet not long after that and landed a big left hand that seemed to stun Castillo for a moment.

Video: Mike Goldberg, Joe Rogan’s shock over Weidman’s UFC 162 KO of Silva

Much of the MMA world was shocked nearly two weeks ago, not that Chris Weidman beat Anderson Silva to win the UFC’s middleweight title, but the manner in which he did it. Weidman stopped Silva in the second round, stopping his 16-fight UFC win streak and 10 straight title defenses, but also becoming the first man to ever knock out the Brazilian pound-for-pound great. Count UFC commentators Mike Goldberg and Joe Rogan among those who were left stunned by the way the fight went down. Now you can go behind the scenes of UFC 162, which took place July 6 at MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas, and see some unique footage of Goldberg and Rogan seconds after Silva was laid out on the canvas by the challenger. Anderson Silva already 2-to-1 favorite over Chris Weidman in potential rematch

Former UFC middleweight champion Anderson Silva already is a 2-to-1 favorite over the man who just took his title, Chris Weidman , should a potential rematch happen. Veteran oddsmaker Joey Oddessa on Tuesday confirmed the opening lines with MMAjunkie.com (www.mmajunkie.com). Oddessa said the line opened at -175, but within the first few hours already had been bet up to -200 for Silva. Silva (33-5 MMA, 16-1 UFC) put his title on the line against Weidman (10-0 MMA, 6-0 UFC) at this past Saturday’s UFC 162. After a first round that saw Silva win on one judge’s scorecard, but Weidman on the other two, Silva started the second by continuing a pattern he has shown in the past – trying to bait his opponent in by ducking and dodging and asking Weidman to hit him. But right after getting hit and playing possum, Silva got hit with a Weidman left that put him on the canvas, and a few quick shots on the ground later his 16-fight UFC win streak and 10 middleweight title defenses had gone by the wayside. UFC President Dana White said following the event that he’ll be pushing for a rematch – even though Silva said Weidman is the new champion and he doesn’t want to fight for the title anymore.

The way it normally works in the fight business, the person who gets knocked out shows up at the press conference later, trying to convince the promoter, the media and the fans that he deserves a rematch. Not the other way around. But then, there was nothing normal about the main event of UFC 162 in Las Vegas, so why should the immediate aftermath be different? All it took was one left hook from challenger Chris Weidman (10-0 MMA, 6-0 UFC) to put an end to Anderson Silva ‘s (33-5 MMA, 16-1 UFC) clowning around in the cage, and with it his record-breaking reign as UFC middleweight champion. The sweat wasn’t even dry on the canvas when the rematch talk started, but leave it to the mercurial Silva to go sprinting down the road less traveled at every opportunity. “I don’t fight anymore for the belt,” Silva said moments after suffering his first loss in more than seven years, and the only knockout loss of his 16-year career.
