Several fighters controlled their destinies at Invicta FC 6, including Claudia Gadelha and Leslie Smith . Gadelha stepped up on short notice to fight Ayaka Hamasaki on Saturday night, stepping in for injured strawweight champion Carla Esparza. It was a risky fight for Jewels 115-pound champion Hamasaki, who lost the bout via TKO stoppage to Gadelha. Not only did Hamasaki suffer the first defeat of her career, she also lost her title shot. With the victory, Gadelha earned the shot at Esparza when the champion returns from a knee injury suffered in training. With her unanimous decision victory over Jennifer Maia, Leslie Smith also earned title shot.

function not found Following her first successful outing in Invicta last year, current Jewels strawweight champion Ayaka Hamasaki is eager to follow up her success with her return to the promotion at Invicta FC 6 this Saturday night. “I really enjoyed the atmosphere of the venue last time,” Hamasaki told MMAWeekly.com . “I like when the fans are loud so I really feel comfortable fighting for Invicta FC. I am very excited about this Saturday night.” While Hamasaki is coming into the fight undefeated at 9-0, she felt her most recent performance was lacking. Hamasaki defeated Emi Fujino via unanimous decision in December. “(My performance in December) was not good at all,” said Hamasaki. “I injured my neck, so I really couldn’t fully train for that fight. “I shot in carelessly and she caught me few times, and in terms of utilizing (her game), Fujino-san was much better than myself.” Originally Hamasaki was supposed to face Carla Esparza for the Invicta strawweight title this Saturday, but unfortunately Esparza had to drop out of the fight

Invicta FC strawweight champion Carla Esparza has been forced out of her scheduled July 13 title defense against Ayaka Hamasaki due to a knee injury. MMAWeekly.com confirmed the news with Invicta FC president Shannon Knapp. It was first reported on Tuesday by MMAFighting.com . Esparza’s injury has caused a shake-up to the Invicta FC 6 fight card and could possibly lead to the crowning of an interim titleholder. Claudia Gadelha, who was originally scheduled to face Joanne Calderwood on the fight card, will now face Hamasaki. Invicta FC officials are waiting to learn how long Esparza’s injury will keep her sidelined before making a decision on whether Hamasaki vs. Gadelha will be for an interim title. The promotion is awaiting commission approval on a new opponent for Calderwood.

Invicta FC strawweight champion Carla Esparza (9-2) is injured, so Ayaka Hamasaki (9-0) will meet replacement Claudia Gadelha (9-0) at Invicta FC 6. Gadelha tweeted news of the change on Saturday, though an official announcement wasn’t made. Esparza, though, today tweeted news of a knee injury following a report from MMAFighting.com . As Esparza wrote on Twitter: “I am devastated, there is no worse thing for an athlete to experience. I have had this injury for a few weeks, but kept training and did what I could because that’s what fighters do, we fight through things even when they are tough. I was still planning to fight, until I recently discovered a tear was confirmed. I apologize to my fans, fans, and family who wanted to see me perform, I wanted to put on an amazing fight for you.” Invicta FC 6 takes place July 13 at Ameristar Casino Hotel in Kansas City, Mo
