UFC 242 medical suspensions: Joanne Calderwood out up to six months with nasal issue

Joanne Calderwood scored one of the most important victories of her career at UFC 242, but she might have to sit out awhile before she can capitalize on her victory. Calderwood earned a split-decision victory over Andrea Lee in the featured strawweight prelim bout at Saturday’s card in Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates, but she’ll also have to miss up to six months due to a nasal issue coiming out of the fight. That’s the most noteworthy item out of the medical suspensions for the event, which were obtained by MMA Junkie on Tuesday. With no official athletic commission to oversee the event in the U.A.E., the UFC self-regulated the card.

Andrea Lee The Nevada State Athletic Commission today suspended Invicta FC flyweight Andrea Lee for nine months and fined her 30 percent of her $3,000 purse ($900) from Invicta FC 16. “KGB” Lee (4-2) tested positive for a pair of diuretics – canrenone and spironolactone – after a submission loss to Sarah D’Alelio (9-6) by rear-naked choke in the third round at the March 11 event at Trinidad Pavilion at Tropicana Las Vegas. Lee’s suspension, which previously was agreed upon as part of a settlement with the NSAC, is retroactive to the date of her losing effort, which means she’ll be eligible to fight Dec

UFC Fight Night 51 was the second of four UFC events in September, and although the card lacked the star power of some other shows this month, the end result was a solid night of fights. Andrei Arlovski (23-10 MMA, 12-4 UFC) evened his two-fight series with Antonio Silva (18-6-1 MMA, 2-3-1 UFC) in the main event when he uncorked a huge right hand that ultimately led to a first-round knockout inside Nilson Nelson Gymnasium in Brasilia, Brazil. The UFC returned to pay-per-view on Saturday for the first time since Fourth of July weekend with UFC 177 at Sacramento’s Sleep Train Arena A UFC bantamweight championship fight headlined the card. However, it wasn’t the one anticipated for the past few months. T.J. Dillashaw (11-2 MMA, 7-2 UFC) held on to his belt with a fifth-round knockout of last-minute replacement Joe Soto (15-3 MMA, 0-1 UFC) after his original opponent, ex-champ Renan Barao , pulled out on the eve of the event.
