Even with their media exposure, Ronda Rousey takes pleasure in getting one over on her rival Miesha Tate . The UFC women’s bantamweight champion said an ESPN story on female athletes and breasts wasn’t just exciting because she was quoted, but because she got more copy than Tate. “Know why it was so awesome?” Rousey asked MMAjunkie.com (www.mmajunkie.com). “Because it was the ‘Body Issue,’ and my picture with clothes on was bigger than Miesha’s naked picture, and my article quoted me more than her little snippet.” In the story, Rousey, a bronze medal winner in judo at the 2008 Olympics, spoke colorfully about about grappling with her own body as she fought Liz Carmouche at UFC 157, which was the first UFC pay-per-view event to feature female headliners.

On Feb. 23, the UFC showcased its first female fight. This past Saturday night at UFC on FOX 8 in Seattle, history was made again when the UFC promoted two women’s bouts on one card. Bantamweights Liz “Girl-Rilla” Carmouche and Germaine “The Iron Lady” de Randamie were both victorious in televised matchups.

Despite rumors, UFC not looking to add additional women’s divisions

SEATTLE – Recent rumors that the addition of a new women’s division to the UFC was imminent are false, UFC President Dana White told MMAjunkie.com (www.mmajunkie.com) following Saturday’s UFC on FOX 8 event. White, who has previously said the promotion could eventually add more weight classes for the ladies, said it will be a while before there are opportunities beyond the bantamweight division. “We’re still building up this division and getting people to know who these girls are,” he said. “We’ve got to see how this one works for a couple years before we (add new divisions).” So far, White said he’s happy with the development of the 135-pound class, which formally started in February with an all-female headliner between champ Ronda Rousey and challenger Liz Carmouche at UFC 157. Carmouche returned on Saturday night and beat UFC newcomer Jessica Andrade via second-round TKO in the first FOX-televised bout at UFC on FOX 8, which took place at Seattle’s KeyArena.

The Ultimate Fighting Championship released the attendance and gate figures for Saturday’s UFC on Fox 8: Johnson vs. Moraga event in Seattle at the post fight press conference. 7,816 spectators went to KeyArena to witness the 12-fight card, resulting in $735,000 in gate revenue. Demetrius Johnson defended his UFC flyweight title by submitting challenger John Moraga in the final round of the main event. Johnson’s speed and ability to get the fight to the ground kept Moraga neutralized throughout the championship bout. In the final round, Johnson secured a takedown and applied an arm bar that forced Moraga to tap out or suffer injury. Rory MacDonald proved his top-three welterweight ranking by defeating Jake Ellenberger by a clear unanimous decision in the co-main event. The night of fights also featured Robbie Lawler adding another highlight reel knockout to his career highlights with a knockout of Bobby Voelker and Liz Carmouche becoming the first female fighter to log two fights in the UFC with her technical knockout win over Germain de Randamie. When Liz Carmouche stepped into the UFC women’s bantamweight championship bout opposite titleholder Ronda Rousey at UFC 157, many people believed she hadn’t yet earned her position as title challenger. She nearly caught Rousey in a submission that night. If that weren’t enough to make believers out of her doubters, Carmouche’s follow-up performance at UFC on Fox 8 on Saturday night should make converts of the remaining skeptics. Carmouche stepped in the Octagon with 21-year-old Brazilian fighter Jessica Andrade in Seattle, immediately taking control. She put Andrade up against the cage early, but quickly took her to the mat, employing her harsh ground and pound attack. Carmouche looked like she might just run away with the fight, but Andrade someone regained her feet late in the round and slammed Carmouche to the canvas. Andrade locked on an arm-in guillotine choke and held it for the duration of the round, but Carmouche remained calm and road it out to the horn. In round two, it was all Carmouche
