California governor Gavin Newsom signs MMA fighter retirement benefit fund into law

California is the first state to have an MMA fighter retirement benefit fund written into law. On Sunday, the state’s governor Gavin Newsom signed Assembly Bill 1136 (AB 1136), which outlines the fund that is expected to go into effect in 2024. Details of the fund are still to be configured by the California State Athletic Commission (CSAC). MMA fighters who competed in at least 39 scheduled rounds worth of mixed martial arts contests in California will qualify to receive funds when they turn 50 years of age. According to the California Department of Consumer Affairs, the fund will not be comprised of direct taxpayer money (general funds)

Cris Cyborg has divulged details behind she and Cat Zingano’s post-fight verbal exchange at Bellator 300. This past weekend, Cyborg handed Zingano the first defeat of her Bellator MMA run with a first-round TKO in the night’s co-main event. After the fight, Zingano and Cyborg could be seen having a verbal exchange with one another that got fairly heated. Speaking at the post-fight press conference, Cyborg claims it was Zingano’s hostility towards her afte the fight that sparked things. “Usually, I really don’t hate my opponents,” Cyborg said.“I just said thank you to her for accepting the fight to fight each other. Then she said, ‘I don’t want to be your friend.’ She was saying something like I was a stalker, something like this.

SAN DIEGO – Five of the six Bellator 300 main-card participants earned a disclosed payout of $150,000, with Cris Cyborg earning twice that amount. California State Athletic Commission executive director Andy Foster released a full list of fighter purses Saturday to MMA Junkie. The amounts reflect the disclosed payouts only and do not include any off-contract bonuses, sponsor payments or discretionary bonuses. Lightweight champion Usman Nurmagomedov , Brent Primus , Cat Zingano , flyweight champ Liz Carmouche , and Ilima-Lei Macfarlane each took home $150,000, while women’s featherweight champ Cyborg earned $300,000. All six fighters earned a flat amount as opposed to being paid show money and win money
