Filed under: News , UFC , Videos On the heels of his major role in the “xXx” sequel earlier this year, UFC middleweight champion Michael Bisping soon will be back on the big screen. Bisping has a starring role in the forthcoming “My Name is Lenny,” a British-based drama biopic about Lenny McLean, a famous bareknuckle boxer in England. In the 1970s, McLean had three unlicensed fights with Roy Shaw, who is played by Bisping in the film. “My Name is Lenny” will be released in theaters on June 9, primarily in the United Kingdom, and on Blu-Ray and DVD three days later on June 12. Michael Bisping Bisping isn’t the only fighter who appears in the film, though. Recently retired former UFC fighter Cathal Pendred has an appearance, as well.

DUBLIN – John Kavanagh has often been described as the godfather of Irish MMA, a one-man movement that, over the course of a lifetime’s work and against staggering odds, fostered the sport’s evolution in his home country from a sideshow into a tangible outlet for young athletes to earn a living. The reality is a little less grandiose, but not entirely, because the SBG name is now synonymous with combat sports in Ireland and beyond. That said, Kavanagh’s journey is not just an engaging subplot in the larger narrative of the sport in Ireland. And, in fact, it is one of a prominent protagonist who inadvertently undertook a seismic endeavor. Along with men like Andy Ryan and Dave Roche, he midwifed the birth of MMA on the island and has remained at its vanguard. Almost two decades have passed since the Dubliner opened his first gym which, by his own admission, made the average shoebox seem spacious.

Citing lack of passion, UFC welterweight Cathal Pendred announces MMA retirement

Cathal Pendred UFC welterweight and “Ultimate Fighter 19” veteran Cathal Pendred today announced he’s retiring from MMA after six years as a professional. In a prepared statement posted on his Twitter account, Pendred said his feelings for the sport have changed and he’s decided to step away from the life of an active fighter while still remaining in the sport. “I have other interests that I want to pursue,” he wrote. “The time is right to close one door and open another.” Pendred’s rep was unavailable for comment. Pendred, 28, hangs up his gloves with a 17-4-1 record while going 4-2 in the UFC. A crowd favorite while fighting in Ireland, he leaves an uneven legacy in the sport.

Of the five Irish-born athletes to compete on the card at 3Arena, three emerged victorious while two others suffered defeats inside the octagon. Interim UFC featherweight champion and the face of Irish MMA, Conor McGregor , did not compete on the card. However, “The Notorious” still had some thoughts on the card that featured four of his SBG Ireland teammates (via Twitter ). The game is truly bitter sweet! Proud of all my teammates. DUBLIN – Tom Breese needed just one round to dismantle Cathal Pendred , and he barely broke a sweat while doing it. Behind stinging left hand counters, Breese (9-0 MMA, 2-0 UFC) hurt Pendred (17-4-1 MMA, 4-2 UFC) early, then kept on him until a bloodied Pendred dropped to the floor for the last time late in the first frame, prompting referee Leon Roberts to call a halt to the fight at the 4:37 mark of Round 1.
