A press release issued this past week by World Series of Fighting announced an upcoming lightweight tournament to crown its first champion at 155 pounds. Among the fighters targeted for the competition was Justin Gaethje , Dan Lauzon , the winner of a fight at WSOF 4 between Gesias Cavalcante and Tyson Griffin and one-handed fighter Nick Newell (9-0). Newell’s opponent at WSOF 4, Keon Caldwell (9-1), was not mentioned, and that has his camp feeling two things – worried the promotion is displaying favoritism, and motivated to spoil its plans. “Throughout the whole process, it seems like the attention has been on Nick a little more than Keon,” Caldwell’s trainer, Richard Cox, told MMAjunkie.com (www.mmajunkie.com). “(WSOF is) a great company – I just think they’re on the Nick Newell hype train

Justin Gaethje Rocketing Up Lightweight Ranks, but Not Rushing a WSOF Title Fight

Upon making his major promotion debut at the World Series of Fighting 2 event in March, Colorado lightweight up-and-comer Justin Gaethje may have been the underdog to Dream and Strikeforce veteran Gesias “JZ” Cavalcante, but he didn’t perform like it. Over the course of two and a half minutes, Gaethje did exactly what he set out to do and finished Cavalcante, putting himself on the map in the process. “I was excited for the opportunity to be on national television and fight a guy who was well-known and show the people that I really do belong with everybody else and that I can hold my own and that I’ve been working on my skills,” said Gaethje. “That was the game plan going in was to pressure him and make him feel uncomfortable, and that’s what I did.” While Gaethje made Cavalcante uncomfortable in their fight, he told MMAWeekly.com that he was very at ease at the event thanks to the way the WSOF treated him. “It’s an awesome company,” said Gaethje. “It’s obviously the biggest platform I’ve been on. They’re trying to do a big thing and they’re taking care of the fighters and that’s the most important part.” Gaethje’s return to the WSOF on Friday looks to be a match-up of fighters with equal skillsets as he is slated to take on former UFC fighter Brian “Bandit” Cobb.

The two Silvas were once teammates at American Top Team, but Thiago has since joined the Blackzilians. Perhaps that doesn’t sit well with Bigfoot, who took to Twitter immediately following Thiago’s victory to throw out a challenge to his former teammate. “Thiago weighs 105 kilograms (231.5 pounds). FORTALEZA, BRAZIL – After a night full of submissions, Thiago Silva and Rafael Cavalcante threw caution to the wind and decided to engage in a good ol’ fashioned slugfest. It was a wise move for Silva. The light heavyweights met on the FUEL TV-televised main card of Saturday’s UFC on FUEL TV 10 event at Paulo Sarasate Arena in Fortaleza, Ceara, Brazil. With both fighters in head-hunting mode and launching power shots in their grudge match, Silva (15-3 MMA, 6-3 UFC) eventually backed his opponent to the cage and tagged Cavalcante (11-4 MMA, 0-1 UFC) with a series of straight punches.
